UNITED STATES FATENT FFIcE.
GEORGE HENRY GORDON, SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
SHOVEL.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,267, dated November 6, 1888.
Application filed June 2, 1888. ScrialNo. 275,799. (No model.)
ends of straps secured to the handle, one of said plates having a shoulder against which the other plate abuts, said shoulder being so located and constructed as to receive with the plates all strain when the shovel is in use.
My invention consists in certain details of construction, to be hereinafter pointed out in the specification and claims.
Figure I shows a top view of my improved shove], the handle being broken off; Fig. 2,the
- blade by itself; Figs. 3 and 4, views of the flanged. straps to be referred to; Fig. 5, a partial section on the dotted line a; m, Fig. 1; and.
Fig. 6, a modification to be referred to.
Referring to the drawings, the handle a, of ordinary construction, has secured to it, as by rivets 11*, the two straps b b. The lower ends of the said straps b-b are flanged outwardly to form the front and back plates, 1) If, one of which, as b", has formed upon its inner face, and preferablynear its upper edge,an irregular shoulder, 12 (See Fig. 3.) The plate I) bears upon the face of the said shoulder, to which it is secured by rivets if. A space is thus presented between the said front and back plates, 1)? b for the reception of a shovelblade, 0, as shownin section, Fig. 5. The upper edge of the said shovel-blade 0 (see Fig. 2) is recessed or cut out to conform to the under side of the said irregular shoulder 11*, against which said blade abuts, it being held in such position by a screw, 6, passing through the front plate, b the shovel-blade c, and into the back plate, b (See Fig. 5.) The irregular shoulder b is preferably made as shown in Fig. 3, presenting a horizontal portion, 2, at each end, and a central downwardly-extending U- shaped portion, 3, whereby the said shoulder, together with the front and back plates, 6 b, are made to take the entire strain when the shovel is in use.
The blade 0 may be removed by loosening the screw 6, for the purpose of applying a new blade; or,ifdesired, ablade ofdifferentshapesuch as shown in Fig. 6-may be substituted, thereby adapting the shovel to adifferent class of work.
I claim- 1. In a shovel, the handle at, having thereon straps b b, flanged at their lower ends to form plates b b a shoulder, b*,on one of said plates, against which the other plate abuts, combined with a blade, 0, placed between said plates 1) b and abutting against the said shoulder, and a fastening for said blade, substantially as described.
2. In a shovel, the handle at, having thereon the straps b b, flanged at their lower ends to form plates 1) b one of which plates has upon its inner face a shoulder, 1), against which the other plate abuts and is secured, combined with a blade, 0, placed between the said plates and abutting against thesaid shoulder, and the screw 6, forholding the blade in position, substantially as described.
3. In a shovel, the handle at, having thereon straps b b, flanged at their lower ends to present plates 1) 11 a shoulder, b, comprising a U-shaped central portion and horizontal end portions, as shown, formed upon the inner face of one of the said plates, and to which the other blade is secured, combined with the blade 0, the upper edge of which is shaped to conform to the said shoulder, against which it abuts, and the detachable fastening for the said blade, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I GEORGE HENRY GORDON.
Vitnesses:
FRANK G. EsrEs, HENRY D. SMART.
