Definitions

  • This invention relates to apparatus for repairing automobile frames and the like and is in some respects similar to the apparatus shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,398,565 dated Aug. 27, 1968.
  • the present device is considered to be an improvement over the patented apparatus.
  • the main object of the present invention is to improve the versatility of the repair apparatus and at the same time make the apparatus portable so as to be more readily adaptable to use under different situations.
  • Another object of the invention is the provision of a support for the'pulling device which is light weight and at the same time extremely rigid.
  • Yet another object of the invention is the provision of a support for the pulling device which is more versatile than prior art devices of like nature in that once the apparatus is set up in a stable manner, the direction of pull may be widely changed both in a horizontal direction and in a vertical direction.
  • FIG. 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of the invention.
  • FIG. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken in a plane indicated by lines 2-2 of FIG. 1.
  • FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the pulling device.
  • FIG. 4 is a top plan view of the pulling device.
  • FIG. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of an automobile frame showing one application of the invention.
  • FIG. 6 is a view similar to FIG. 5 showing another application of the invention.
  • FIG. 7 is an isometric view of the abutment means.
  • FIG. 8 is an isometric view of the connection between the cross bar and one leg of the support apparatus.
  • FIG. 9 is an isometric view of a combination abutment and clamp for securing a cross bar to the pinch weld of an automobile body.
  • the invention comprises a base assembly which includes a pair of elongated legs generally designated 1, 2 respectively, each of which is preferably formed from tubular material having a rectangular cross section.
  • leg 1 is provided adjacent one of its ends with a pair of hinge elements 3, 4 which are preferably welded to the sidewalls of leg 1.
  • Leg 2 is provided at one of its ends with a complementarily formed hinge element adapted to cooperate with hinge element 3 so that the legs 1, 2 may be pivotally connected together by a hinge pin 5.
  • leg 2 is shown swingably connected to leg 1 on one side of the latter so that it may be folded to an inner position represented by the dotdash line and alongside the leg 1 when it is desired to store the apparatus.
  • leg 2 may be removed from the hinge element 3 and transferred to the opposite side of 2 leg 1 to the position shown in. dotted lines in FIG. 2.
  • Leg 1 is preferably provided with an extension 8 which is telescopically received within leg 1 and a similar extension 9 is telescopically received within leg 2.
  • these extensions may be fixedly secured relative to the main leg by providing through holes 10, 11 in the leg and extension respectively (see FIG. 1).
  • a pin 12 may be passed through registering holes so as to fix the extension in any desired position.
  • Each leg 1, 2 is preferably provided with ground wheels 7.
  • a post 15 of circular cross section Extending upwardly from leg 1 and fixedly secured as by welding thereto, is a post 15 of circular cross section. Brackets 16, 17 may be welded to post 15 and leg 1 to provide additional stability for the post.
  • the post 15 serves to support a pulling device generally desig nated 18 which is very similar to the pulling device disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,398,565 dated Aug. 27, 1968 and to which patent reference is made for details not disclosed herein.
  • the pulling device 18 is connected to a sleeve 19 slidably supported on the post 15. Another sleeve is provided under the sleeve 19 so that the pulling device 18 may ,be positioned in any desired location along the vertical extent of the post 15.
  • Said sleeve 120 is provided with a locking screw 121 to permit the sleeve 120 to be secured to post 15 in any desired position thereby positioning the pulling device 18 at any point along the length of the post 15.
  • the pulling device 18 disclosed herein unlike that disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,398,565, may be swung in a horizontal plane to obtain whatever angularity is desired with reference to the post 15.
  • FIG. 5 One application of the invention is given by way of example in FIG. 5 wherein longitudinally extending frame members 20, 21 of an automobile are shown. If it is desired to exert a pulling effort on a distorted portion 22 of the frame 21 for example, the pulling device 18 may be connected by means of a chain 23 with a hook 24 engaging the portion 22 of the frame 21.
  • the frame member 20 By spreading the legs 1, 2 apart to the general position shown in FIG. 5 the frame member 20 may be engaged by brackets 25.
  • One of these brackets 25 is shown in FIG. 7 and comprises a base plate 26 supported on leg 1 or leg 2. Extending downwardly from the outer side edges of base plate 26 are a pair of side plates 27 which fit along the vertical side walls of the leg I.
  • Said side plates 27 are provided with rectangular openings 28 which extend below the bottom side of leg 1 so that a wedge 29 may be driven through the apertures 28 and into tight engagement with the bottom side of leg 1, thereby firmly securing the bracket 25 relative to the leg 1 or leg 2.
  • a pivot 31 Swingably secured to base plate 26 by a pivot 31 is the horizontal leg of an angle 32 and which horizontal leg is provided with an arcuate slot 33 through which projects a bolt 34 secured as by welding at its lower end to the base plate 26.
  • a nut 35 cooperates with bolt 34 so that the angle 32 may be set in whatever desired angular position is required to engage the frame 20 or similar structure.
  • a chain 40 may be provided which is connected at one end to a hook 41 carried by a sliding saddle 42 which may be fixedly secured to the extension 9 for example, of leg 2 by means of a wedge (not shown) in a similar manner to the wedge 29 of FIG. 7.
  • the other end of chain 40 may be connected to a hook 44 carried by another saddle 45 on the extension 8 of leg 1.
  • FIG. 6 Another example of the operation of the invention is shown in FIG. 6 wherein the frame members 20, 21 are indicated and it is desired to exert a pulling effort on one distorted end 46 of the frame 21.
  • the leg 1 has mounted thereon a bracket 25 for engaging the frame member 21 as indicated in FIG. 6.
  • the other leg 2 of the supporting structure is positioned substantially parallel to the frame member and a pulling effort is directed transversely of the automobile through chain 23 and hook 24.
  • the support for the pulling device 18 may be rigidly held in place relative to the automobile by means of cross bars generally designated 50.
  • FIG. 8 comprises a pair of elongated tubular elements 51 of rectangular cross section spaced apart to provide a space therebetween and fixedly secured together at their ends by means of end plates 52.
  • FIG. 8 A typical connection for connecting a cross bar 50 to one of the legs 1, 2 is shown in FIG. 8 wherein a saddle member 54 is provided on leg 1, for example, and fixedly secured to said leg by means of a wedge 55.
  • the upper side of saddle 54 is provided with a nut 56 which cooperates with a threaded bolt 57 which in turn is welded at its upper end to a block 58.
  • This block 58 is apertured to receive a wedge 59 therethrough so as to fixedly but releasably connect the cross bar 50 to the leg 1 or the leg'2.
  • a cross bar 50 may be fixedly secured by the structure shown in FIG. 8 to legs 1 and 2 so as to provide a rigid structure and to prevent the legs 1, 2 from moving relative to each other.
  • the above described structure may be connected to the automobile body itself by a clamp generally designated 65 and illustrated in FIG. 9.
  • This clamp 65 comprises a base plate 66 to which is welded an upstanding flange 67 which is held rigidly relative to base plate 66 by means of gussett plate 68.
  • the side of flange 67 opposite the gussett plate 68 may be used as an abutment against one of the frame members 20, 21 of the automobile.
