PATENT LACHLAN E. MOKINNON, OF BUFFALO, NEWYORK.
DASHBBOARD.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391.420, dated October 23, 1888.
Application filed March 3, 1888.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it k nown that I, LAGHLAN E. McKINNoN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Iinprovements in Dash-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in the fastenings whereby the dash-frame is attached to the feet or supporting-irons secured to the vehiclebody; and it has for its object to produce a simple and inexpensive fastening, the parts of which shallbe concealed, so as to Vform a neat and sightly finish.
The invention consists of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical cross-section of a dash-board provided with my improved fastening. Fig. 2is a horizontal section in line x as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the lower corners of the dash-board with a portion of the leather covering cnt away. Fig. 4 is avertical crosssection showing amodified construction of the fastening.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the front end of the vehicle body or frame.
B is the dashboard frame. b is its leather covering, and() is one of the dash feet or irons whereby the dash-board frame is secured to the body A. The feet C may be of any desired form to suit vehicle-bodies of different styles.
d is a screw bolt or shank attached to the lower rail, b, of the dash-frame and projecting therefrom. The screw-shank d is preferably provided with a square or Hat-sided neck, which is arranged in a correspondinglyshaped opening in the rail b', so as to be held against turning therein. Each foot C is provided at or near its front end with a nut or enlargement, e, having a screwthreaded opening, which is adapted to engage with the screw shank or bolt d.
Vhen the boltorshank d has been attached Serial No. 266,077. (No model.)
to the dash-frame, the nut or threaded opening e of the dash-foot is engaged with the outer end ofthe screw-shank, and the foot C is turned upon the latter until its front end bears against the rear side of the rail b. In this manner the head of the screwshank d is tightly drawn into its seat, and the foot is firmly clamped against said rail. The dat front end of the foot C finds a seat against the rail Z1 and rigidly holds the foot against lateral movement. Vhen the foot has been attached to the shankd, it is secured to the vehicle-bod y by boltsfin a well-known manner.
In the modified construction represented in Fig. 4 a smooth opening, g, is formed in the front end of the daslrfoot C, and a loose nut, h, is arranged in the opening g, which nut engages with the screw-'shank d of the dash-frame. In this construction the front end of the dashfoot is arranged at right angles to the body of the dash-foot.
My improved fastening is very simple in construction and all its parts are hidden from view, thereby producing a plain and neat nish without any projecting or unsightly parts. It also has the great advantage of not requiring any special construction of dash-frame, as it can be applied toany of the ordinary dashes heretofore manufactured.
I claim as my invention-n l. The combination, with the dash-frame provided with a projecti ng screw bolt or shank, of a dash-foot provided in its front end with a screw-socket which engages with said screwshank, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the dash-frame provided with an opening, of a screw bolt o1' shank, d, arranged in said opening and held against turning therein, and a dashfoot, C, provided at its front end with a screw-socket engaging with said shank, substantially as set forth.
fitness my hand this 23d day of February, 1888.
LACHLAN E. MCKINNON. Witnesses:
CHESTER D. Hown, FEED. C. GEYER.
