Patent Oct. 21, 1975 TOY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention is for an infants toy or plaything and it has for an object to provide a rattle plaything of improved form which is convenient for hand holding by an infant and which encourages hand and finger manipulation whilst enabling an infant to grasp the plaything and to swing same to cause the rotation of its rattle component.

A further object of the invention is to provide an infants rattle plaything having a stem for hand grasping and wherein there is little risk of the infant choking if the stem is thrust down its throat.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION According to the invention the toy consists of a stem component for hand-holding, a ring member carried by and captive but freely rotatable on said stern and a hollow rattle ball carried by said ring member.

With the toy or plaything of the invention, an infant can grasp the stem component and swing same so that the ring turns therearound. The ball comprises a rattle and the toy also provides teething components, the stem being manipulated to produce the swinging of the ring and ball.

According to an embodiment the stem is shaped so as to resist being thrust down the throat and also, if it should somehow be forced down, so as to provide a passage to prevent the infant from choking.

The stem may have a waisted location and the ring member comprise a D-ring encircling this location, so that when the component is held in a hand, and a general rotary motion imparted thereto the ring will spin around the component. The rattle ball preferably is mounted to be capable of rotation on the linear part of the ring.

The stem component can simulate vaguely a human figure and comprise a bulbous head portion, and trunk portion, the neck junction forming the waisted location. The trunk portion conveniently includes a lower channel part for the reason mentioned above.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The accompanying drawing illustrates a preferred embodiment in perspective.

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT As shown, the stem component has a bulbous head 10, a trunk portion 11 with a. lower channel part or tail 12 for hand holding. The head and trunk portion are circular in transverse cross-section. A hollow rattle ball 13 is carried by a D-ring 114 which ring encircles a waisted neck location 15. The D-ring is noncontinuous, with ends separate and co-axial and within a bore through the ball 13 whereby the ball can be secured on the ring by opening same out, the ring however being of sufficient rigidity to prevent an infant removing same.

The arrangement is such that the ring is captive on the stern component but can swing therearound, and further, the ball can revolve on the axles formed by the co-linear D-ring portions.

It will be understood that the ball contains a pea, slug or like component or components to produce the rattle noise when the ball spins around the stem component and/or when the ball rotates on the ring or the toy shaken.

The lower channel part 12 provides an air passage if, despite its being shaped to make the risk minimal, this portion should be forced into a childs mouth.

The stem component preferably is made from polythene by blow moulding.

The plaything constitutes a rattle, a teether, and a plaything which by reason of the construction offers early manipulative experience for a child.

The plaything has a resemblance to the upper part of a human figure, with a birds tail.

An infants toy or plaything comprising a stem component for hand-holding, said stem comprising a bulbous head portion, a trunk portion and a waisted neck portion joining said head and trunk portions, a ring member carried by and captive but freely rotatable on said stem around said waisted neck portion, and a hollow rattle ball carried by said ring member.

2. A toy as claimed in claim 1, wherein the rattle ball is rotatably mounted on the ring member.

3. A toy as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ring member comprises a D-ring encircling the waisted portion and with separate co-axial ends, said ends engaging within a bore through the rattle ball.

4. A toy as claimed in claim 1, wherein the trunk portion includes a lower tail part having a channel extending therealong.

Claims (4)

1. An infant''s toy or plaything comprising a stem component for hand-holding, said stem comprising a bulbous head portion, a trunk portion and a waisted neck portion joining said head and trunk portions, a ring member carried by and captive but freely rotatable on said stem around said waisted neck portion, and a hollow rattle ball carried by said ring member.

2. A toy as claimed in claim 1, wherein the rattle ball is rotatably mounted on the ring member.

3. A toy as claimed in claim 1, wherein the ring member comprises a D-ring encircling the waisted portion and with separate co-axial ends, said ends engaging within a bore through the rattle ball.

4. A toy as claimed in claim 1, wherein the trunk portion includes a lower tail part having a channel extending therealong.
