NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL JOSEF HERMANN, OF BIELEFELD, PRUSSIA, GERMANY.
VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,321, dated October 16, 1888. Application filed June 14, 1888. Serial No. 277,128. (No model.) Patented in England March 28,1888, No. 4,735.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL Josnn HERMANN, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Bielefeld, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vises, (for which, I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 4,735, bearing date March 28, 1888, and have filed applications for patents in Germany March 19, 1888; in Belgium March 30, 1888, and in Austria March 29, 1888,) of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to parallel vises by which a rapid and secure clamping of the work can be obtained by means of a movable handle without further manipulation of the mechanism of the vise, as set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a side elevation of a vise, partly iu section, along the line :v fc, Fig. 2. Fig. 2is a section along the line a Z), Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a modiiication, partly in section, along the line y y, Fig. 4. Fig. 4. is a section along the line x x, Fig. 3.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The jaw A is made continuous or in one piece with the leg S. The insertion and releasing of the pawlz' relatively to the rack .@,as also the regulation of the relative position of the jaws A B for clamping a piece of work, are attained by means of a shaft or actuator, w, which can be turned by the handle c. The shaft w is held in the leg S by means of the nuts m m,and is provided with an eccentric e, the rod e of which connects with the bellcrank lever d. The bell-crank lever d connects with the pawl-rod h.
If the shaft w is turned as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, the eccentric-rod e descends, and the lever d is turned so as to exert a pressure on the pawl z' toward the rear of the device, or in the direction of jaw B. The leg S and jawA are thus pressed forward or moved away from the jaw B, so that the work s is released. By turning the shaft w in the direction opposed to said arrow the eccentric-rod e is raised and a pull is exerted on the pawl-rod h, drawing the jaw A toward the jaw B and causing a clamping of the workbetween the jaws.
The shaft w carries a lug, n, which, when the shaft is turned in the direction to separate the jaws, presses against the rod t, connecting with the pawl-rod h. The pressure of the 1ugndcpresses the rod t and moves the pawl-rod h to lift the pawl t' out of the rack z, whereupon the leg S can be freely moved upon'the roller R.
In the modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the shaft w has a worm gearing into the wormH wheel g. This worm-Wheel is connected by a rod, t, and bell-crank leverd with the pawl-rod hand pawl z'. On turning the wheel g, so as to lower the rod t, the pawl z will gear into the rack z, and on the rotation of the wheel g being continued the resulting pressure will cause thejaws to come toward one another. When the pawl is in the position shown in Fig. 8, the leg S, with the jawy A, can be freely moved. An advantage of the construction shown in Fig. 3 is that a considerable pressure can be imparted to the pawl, so that the work will be rmly clamped between the jaws.
To prevent foreign matter-such as dust or filings-from getting onto the guide or way of the leg S, a thin steel or metal plate, p, is secured to one of the jaws or jaw-legs, said plate filling the space between the jaw-legs and its free portion passing under a roller, o, on the other jaw or jaw-leg and extending up along said leg. Upon the jaws passing toward or from one another the roller o will cause the portion of the plate p between the jaw-legs to be laid over the guide or way for one of said legs, so as to cover said guide and prevent the falling thereon of foreign matter.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in a vise, of a stationary jaw having a rack, a movable jaw having a rotating shaft, and a pawl-carrier connected to and operated by said shaft and having a pawl engaging the rack to adjust the movable jaw, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the jaws A B, a rack, and a pawl, of an actuator or shaft, lw, provided with an eccentric, e, and a lug, n, connected to the pawl, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the jaws A B, a rack, and a pawl, of an actuator or shaft, w, provided with an eccentric, e, connected to the ICO pawl by means of a bell-crank lever, d, and In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my zo with a lug, n, connected to the pawl by means hand in the presence of two subscribing witof a rod, t, substantially as described. messes.
