DRILL COUPLING.

RWR I W'] T JV .E'SSES J 47017 yeweZZ UNITED STATES ATENT PERKINS A. GORDON, OF MILAN, OHIO.
DRlLL -COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391.313, dated October 16, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERKINS A. GORDON, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Milan, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drill-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draw- 1ngs.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in couplings for drillshafts, having for its object the provision of simple and efficient means for effecting the coupling of the shaft and drill-point,whereby the accidental loosening or unscrewing of the jointed parts is prevented.
The invention to this end consists in the detail construction and arrangement of the parts substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of portions of the drillshaft, drill-point, and coupling. Fig. 2 is a vertical view showing the parts coupled or united, and Fig. 3 is a detail.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the drill-point rod or shaft provided at its upper end with a tapering right-hand threaded extension, a, and at a point below the lower end of said extension said rod or shaft is provided on its outer surface with a left-hand screwthread, a, as shown.
B is the drill shaft or rod provided at its lower hollowed end with an inner tapering edge of the ring or jacket. This ring or jacket is in practice designed to encompass or be placed upon the drill-shaft A, as shown in Fig. 2.
In practice the threaded tapering extension a of the drill-point rod or shaft A is inserted into the lower hollow end of the shaft or rod B, and screwed therein by means of the corresponding right-hand screw-threads formed on the said tapering extension and on the inner upper surface of said rod or shaft B. After thus screwing together the ends of the rods or shafts the coupling ring or jacket 0, which is previously raised and held out of the way, is screwed down upon theleft-hand screw-thread, a, of the drill-point rod or shaft A, and the flange or shoulder d is caused to bear tightly against the beveled surface of the ring or shoulder bof the rod or shaft B,thus effecting a double securing of the meeting ends of said shaft or rods, whereby the turning or loosening of one section or member will necessarily cause the fastening or further tightening of the others.
From what has been said it will be seen that my invention is extremely simple, cheap, and durable, and that by means thereof a coupling is effected that is impossible to become loose, and that in the event of the slightest turning of one portion or section of the coupled parts the others will be tightened and the better secured by reason of the screw-threads being opposed to each other.
I claim as my invention- In a coupling for drill-shafts, the combination of the drillshaft having a left-hand screwthread on its outer surface and a tapering extension having a right-hand screw-thread, the rod or shaft B, provided with a ring or shoulder at its lower outer end and an interior tapering right-hand thread, and the ring or jacket having an interior left-hand thread and a flange or shoulder, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof Iafiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PERKINS A. GORDON.
