No. 358,897, filed May 10, 1973. which is itself a continuation-in-part of application Serv No. 128,534, filed Mar. 26, I971; both now abandoned.
ln accordance with the present invention, an effective conditioning of the hair and scalp is obtained by rubbing thereinto an effective amount of polytetrafluorocthylene having a molecular weight of between about 1,000,000 and about 10,000,000 and a viscosity greater than 10" poises at 300C. The amount used may vary widely depending on the type and condition of the hair but may easily be determined by the user and his individual requirements.
The polytetrafluoroethylene may be used by itself or in aqueous composition or diluted in any feasible diluent (especially fatty alcohols such as hexadecyl alcohol or the like, or oils such as mineral oils, vegetable oils, or the like. lt is also often desirable to include a thickening, dispersing and emulsifying agent as well as a lu bricating and dressing agent. Any well-known thickening, dispersing or emulsifying agent may be used, as for example, fatty alcohols such as those derived from coconut oil and the like, methyl cellulose, carboxy polymethylene, and any others which are well-known in the art. The lubricating and dressing agent may also be any one or more of the many well-known products generally used for this purpose. Among such products are lanolin, petrolatum, corn oil, lard, neatsfoot oil, sweet almond oil. persic oil, olive oil, soybean oil, shea butter and almost any other feasible type of animal, vegetable or mineral oil. There may also be included a cooling agent preferably of the lower alkanol type, a germicidal agent and a base such as sodium hydroxide or the like if required to raise the pH of the composition to prevent undue acidity.
The desired polytetrafluortiethylene is commercially available under the trade name Teflon P-TFE", which is sold by DuPont.
The thickening, dispersing and emulsifying agent may, as stated above. be any one of a number of products having such properties. Preferably used is a carboxypolymethylene having a molecular weight of about 2,500,000 and a specific gravity of about 1.41. Such product is a high molecular weight carboxyvinyl polymer comprising polyacrylic acid crosslinked with about 1% of polyallyl sucrose having an average of about 5.8 allyl groups for each sucrose molecule. Such carboxypolymethylenes are produced by the B. F. Goodrich Co. under the name of CarbopoF resins. Particular Carbopol resins utilizable in this invention are Carbopol 960 and Carbopol 961. Other Carbopols which can be used are Carbopol 934, Carbopol 940 and Carbopol 941.
This carboxypolymethylene component when used, is preferably in a proportion of about 0.25% by weight.
The lubricating and dressing agent, as stated above, may be any of a large number of products having these properties but, preferably. is petrolatum. This component. when used, is used in a proportion of about 5-80% by weight, preferably about -25% by weight.
The cooling agent is preferably a lower alcohol such as ethanol, n-propanol or isopropanol. Methanol may be used, but is less preferable. It is preferably used in a proportion of about 2-10% by weight.
The germicidal agent may be any one of a number of compatible compounds having germicidal properties and which are compatible with the other ingredients. There are many quaternary ammonium compounds in this category. Among such compounds are benzalkonium chloride, lauryl isoquinolinium pentachlorophenate, dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium saccharinate, and a large variety of other well-known and commercially available quaternary ammonium germicides. Other germicides which can be used are represented by such patents as U.S. Pat. No. 3,417,184, dated Dec. 17, 1968 relating to quaternary ammonium phenates, U.S. Pat. No. 3,285,925, dated Nov. 15, 1966, relating to alkyl isoquinolinium phenates, US. Pat. No. 2,525,738, dated Oct. 3, 1950, relating to hydroxyquinoline and boric acid compositions, and U.S. Pat. No. 2,250,480, dated July 29, 1941, relating to dihydroxy hexachloro diphenyl methane. A particular compound which is preferably used is diisobutylcresoxyethoxyethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, monohydrate', minimum 98.8 percent pure with a molecular weight of 480.1, with the following chemical formula:

Any of these or other germicidal components, when used, are present in a proportion of about 0. l3% by weight.
The following example is illustrative of the present invention, with no intent to limit the invention except as claimed:
EXAMPLE A composition was prepared using 3% by weight of Teflon P-TFE, 1.0% by weight Carbopol 970, 15% by weight petrolatum, 5% by weight isopropanol, 1.0% by weight the germicide, diisobutylcresoxyethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride monohydrate, as defined above, 1.0% by weight diethanolamine, and water to make by weight total.
The Carbopol 960 was first mixed with the water with agitation. This was immediately followed by the addition of the petrolatum, the Teflon, the isopropanol, the germicide, and the diethanolamine in succession, while rapid agitation is continued. The agitation was continued until the composition became too viscous to mix easily. It was then set aside for about 30 minutes. Then it was again agitated for several minutes until a smooth, homogeneous gel was produced. The entire process was conducted at room temperature and pressure.
The product produced in the above manner was a smooth, white cream that is adapted to be rubbed into the hair and scalp.
The invention claimed is:
l. A method of conditioning the hair and scalp which comprises applying to said hair and scalp an effective amount of a conditioning agent comprising polytetrafluoroethylene having a molecular weight of between about 1000000 and about 111000.000 and a viscosity greater than poises at 300C.
2. The method of claim I wherein said conditioning agent is applied in a vehicle selected from the group consisting of water. fatty alcohol and oil.
3. The method of claim I wherein said polytetraflu oroethylene is in a composition which also includes a thickening agent selected from the group consisting of a high molecular weight carboxyvinyl polymer comprising polyacrylic acid erosslinked with about 1% of polyallyl sucrose having an average of about 518 allyl groups for each sucrose molecule, methyl cellulose and a fatty alcohol and a lubricating and dressing agent, said polytctrafluoroethylene being present in said composition in a proportion ofabout (11 to 10% by weight,
said thickening agent being present in a proportion of about 0.2 to 5% by weight and said lubricating and dressing agent being present in a proportion of about 5-80"71 by weight the remainder being water.

A hair and scalp conditioning composition comprising 3' by weight of polytetrafluoroethylene having a molecular weight of between about 1,000,000 and about 10,000,000 and a viscosity of greater than 10'" poises at 300C 1'71 by weight of a high molecular weight earboxyvinyl polymer comprising polyacrylic acid crosslinked with about 1% of polyallyl sucrose having an average of about 5.8 allyl groups for each sucrose molecule 15% by weight of petrolatum, 57( by weight is isopropanol, 1% by weight of diisobutyleresoxyethyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride monohydrate 1% by weight of diethanolamine and the

Claims (4)

1. A method of conditioning the hair and scalp which comprises applying to said hair and scalp an effective amount of a conditioning agent comprising polytetrafluoroethylene having a molecular weight of between about 1,000,000 and about 10,000,000 and a viscosity greater than 1010 poises at 300*C.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein said conditioning agent is applied in a vehicle selected from the group consisting of water, fatty alcohol and oil.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein said polytetrafluoroethylene is in a composition which also iNcludes a thickening agent selected from the group consisting of a high molecular weight carboxyvinyl polymer comprising polyacrylic acid crosslinked with about 1% of polyallyl sucrose having an average of about 5.8 allyl groups for each sucrose molecule, methyl cellulose and a fatty alcohol, and a lubricating and dressing agent, said polytetrafluoroethylene being present in said composition in a proportion of about 0.1 to 10% by weight, said thickening agent being present in a proportion of about 0.2 to 5% by weight and said lubricating and dressing agent being present in a proportion of about 5-80% by weight, the remainder being water.

A HAIR AND SCALP CONDITIONING COMPOSITION COMPRISING 3% BY WEIGHT OF POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE HAVING A MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF BETWEEN ABOUT 1,000,000 AND ABOUT 10,000,000 AND A VISCOSITY OF GREATER THAN 10**10 POISES AT 300*C, 1% BY WEIGHT OF A HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT CARBOXYVINYL POLYMER COMPRISING POLYACRYLIC ACID CROSSLINKED WITH ABOUT 1% OF POLYALLYL SUCROSE HAVING AN AVERAGE OF ABOUT 5.8 ALLYL GROUPS FOR EACH SUCROSE MOLECULE, 15% BY WEIGHT OF PETROLATUM, 5% BY WEIGHT IS ISOPROPANOL, 1% BY WEIGHT OF DIISOBUTYLCRESOXYETHYL DIMETHYL BENZYL AMMONIUM CHLORIDE MONOHYDRATE, 1% BY WEIGHT OF DIETHANOLAMINE AND THE REMAINDER OF WATER.
