DUMPING-SCOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,080, dated October 16, 1888.
Application filed July 20, 1888. Serial No. 280,494. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES SWIFT ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rockport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Scows,of which the following,taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements on the United States Letters Patent granted to me February 15, 1887, No. 357,857, for dumping-scows, and it is carried out as follows,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, Where Figure 1 represents a plan view of the improved dumpingscow. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3- rcpresents an enlarged cross-section on the line C D in Fig. 1, showing the floatable doors as closed; and Fig. 4 represents an enlarged crosssection 0n the line E F in Fig. 1.,showing the floatable doors as partially open.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occnr on the differents parts of the drawings.
In my patent aforesaid I employed windlasses with chains passing outside of the scow and below the floatable doors for the purpose of closing the latter and holding them in such closed positions, and in said patent I also em ployed yielding springs or spring-bunters arranged below the scow at or near the hinged portions of the floatable doors for the purpose of aiding in closing said doors; but such construction, although practical, is objectionable on account of such parts being arranged outside and below the scow-body, and are consequently not easy of access in case of breakage.
My present improvement has for its object to obviate such objections, for which purpose I dispense with the outside chains formerly used and employ vertically-adj ustable lockingrods operated by means of windlasses for the purpose of holding the floatable doors in locked positions. I also dispense with the yielding springs below the scow-body,and use instead thereof compressive springs arranged in a suitable manner on the sc0w-deck,and an improved connecting device from said springs to the floatable doors, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described.
In the drawings, a is the hollow scow-body, having the longitudinal recess a in its bottom, as shown.
a is the well for receiving the load that is to be dumped from the scow.
b b are a pair of hollow floatable doors extending the whole length of the scow, and hinged at I) b to opposesides of the lower longitudinal edges of the well-room a in a manner and for the purpose as fully shown and described in my aforesaid Letters Patent.
My improved device for holding the doors I) b in the closed position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 consists of a vertically-movable looking bar or bolt, 0, arranged to slide up and down in a tube, 0, passing through from top to bottom of the scow and suitably secured to such parts. The said bar or bolt 0 is preferably made of a square or rectangular crosssection, but may be made of any other desirable shape or form without dcpartingfrom the spirit of my invention. The said bar or bolt 0 terminates in its lower end as a head, 0', against which the lower meeting edges of the hinged doors b b are made to rest when said doors are closed and the bar or bolt 0 is raised to its highest position,as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
With my improved scow I use two of these bars or bolts-one at or near each end of the scow, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The hoisting device or Windlass for raising and lowering said bars or bolts is of the same construc tion as shown and described in my aforesaid Letters Patent, and consists of bearings d d, secured to the scow-deck,in which isjournaled the shaft or drum (2, to which is secured the ratchet-wheel d and wheel diprovided on its periphery with a number of radial perforations or recesses, in which a lever or handspike is to be inserted for the purpose of turning the shaft or drum (1 while raising the looking bar or bolt 0, which latter is connected to said shaft or drum by means of a cord or chain, 0 as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.
To the scow-deck is pivoted at c the pawllever c,to which is hinged at e the pawl e", in the same manner as described and shown in my aforesaid Letters Patent.
ff are the double crank shafts located in bearings on the scow-deck, which are connected to the pawl-levers c e and hinged to the releasing-rods gg, the inner ends of which are connected to the lever h, that is pivoted at h to the scow-deck, and provided witha handle, h, as shown in the drawings,and in the same manner as shown and described in my aforesaid Letters Patent.
i is a locking pin inserted in a perforation in the scow-deck for the purpose of holding the lever h, its rods 9 g, and pawlsin a locked position in the same manner as shown and described in the patent aforesaid.
I desire to state that theprecise hoisting de vice for raising the bars or bolts 00 and the releasing device, as shown, forms no part of my present invention, as any other or wellknown device maybe used to equal advantage without departing from the essence of my invention.
My improved spring actuated device for automatically aiding in closing the doors b b is constructed as follows: On the scow-deckI secure in a suitable manner,at or near the ends of the well a, the cylinders k k, in which are located the respective compressive coiled springs 7c, the outer ends of which rest against the bottoms of said cylinders k k, as shown in Fig. 1.) On the free end of each spring 70' rests a perforated plate or washer, is, through which passes loosely the screwbolt Z,provided with atake-up nut,l. (Shown in Fig. 1.) To the inner end of the screw-bolt t is attached in a suitable manner the cord or chain m,that is guided around a sheave or pulley, n, journaled in a suitable manner to the scow-deck, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. 0 is a well, preferably, made of metal, passing through the top and bottom of the scow and suitably secured to said parts. In the upper part of said well is arranged the shaftp, on which are journalcd the sheaves or rollers pp, that serve as guidesfor the ropes or chains mm.
q' is another shaft arranged at or near the bottom of the well 0, on which are journaled the sheaves or rollers q q for guiding the ropes or chains m m, as shown.
The lower end of each rope or chain m is connected to a link, r, that is pivoted at 1" to another link, r,the lower end of which is pivoted at r to the floatable door b, as shown in Fig.4, the object of which is to permit the floatable doors b b to swing outward to the position shown in Fig. 4 when the bolts 0 0 are released, while thescow is in the act of being discharged, without causing any strain on the ropes or chains m m and their springs k k", and simply causing the jointed connecting-links r r to be straightened out, as shown in Fig. 4.
The springs 7c commence to serve as yielding resisting means as soon as the doors b b are swung outward beyond the position shown in Fig. 4 by the pressure of the load that is being discharged, and until the said doors b'b are fully opened, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. As'soon as the scow has been discharged, the doors b b are automatically returned to the position shown in Fig. 4 by the influence of the springs k k and their connecting ropes or i chains m m, and the further and complete closing movement of the said doors will beautomatically accomplished by the buoyancy of the latter, after which the locking-bolts c c are raised by the hoisting device to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The links 7' r are automatically doubled up between recesses in the top portions of the doors b b and the under side of the scow as the doors are being swung from the position shown in Fig. 4. to that shown in Fig. 3. By this arrangement ofjointed connecting-links attached to the lower ends ofthe spring-pressed ropes or chains m m all unnecessary strain on said ropes or chains and their springs is obviated, the doors b b will be caused to open freely as soon as the bolts 0 0 are released and the load discharged, and after the discharge is-rnade the doors will be automatically returned to the closed position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, first by the influence of the springs k k and their connections to the said doors, and finally'by the buoyancy of the latter, as above set forth.
If so desired, the ropes or chains m m may be connected directly to the doors b b without the medium of the links 1" r; but-I prefer in practice to use the latter, combined with said ropes or chains, for the purpose specified.
The tension on the ropes or chains mm and the pressure of the springs It may be adjusted by the turning of the regulating-nuts l lwithin the open ends of the cylinders 70, as shown in i Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I
wish to secure by Letters Patent, andclaim- 1. The hollow scow a and its hinged doors b b, combined with the vertically-movable locking-bolts c c", and the pipes or hollow guides c 0, extending from top to bottom of said scow and adapted to serve as guides for the said locking-bolts, substantially as set forth.
2. The scow a and its hinged doors b b, in combination with the vertically-movable locking-bolts 0 c", and hoisting devices, as described, for raising said bolts whenthe doors are to be locked, substantially as set forth.
3. The scow a and its hinged doors bb and the vertically-movable locking-bolts c c,
adapted to hold the-said doors in a locked position, in combination with a pair of hoisting devices, a pair of ratchet-andpawl-releasing devices, a single lever, h, and connecting mechanism from the latter to the releasing devices, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4.. The scow (1, having the hinged doorsbb,
and the spring-pressed ropes or chains m m, connected to said doors inside of the scow,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 5. The scow at, having the hinged doors b b, and the spring-pressed ropes or chains m m, combined with the jointed links 1" 1", connected to the said doors and to chains or ropes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The scow a and its hinged doors bb, combined with the springs 7c is, the ropes or chains m m, a guide device for the latter, and the jointed links r 1', connected to said doors and to said ropes or chains, substantially as and 5 for the purpose set forth.
7. The soow a and its hinged doorsbb, havingjointed to them the links 9' 1", and the ropes or chains m m, attached to said links, and the compressionsprings k k, arranged IO within the cases It and having means for adjusting the tension of said springs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. A dumping-scow, a, having the floatable doors I) b, hinged to opposite sides of its hot to said doors arranged within the scow-body and between its ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. A dumping-scow, at, having the floatable v doors I) b, hinged to opposite sides of its bot- 20 tom, combined with an automatic spring-closing device connected to said doors arranged within the scow-body and between its ends, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
