UNITED STATES` PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS 'rI-IoMAs LYNCH', oF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
DUMPlNG-CART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.414,947, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed August 16, 1889. Serial No. 321,034. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern/.-
Beit known that I, FRANCIS THOMAS LYNCH, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Dumping Coal-Carts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in that class of dumping-carts in which the body thereof is elevated from the shafts in the dumping operation; and it consists in y certain combinations of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed. A
In the description of the said invent-ion which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l is an exterior side elevation of the principal parts 4of the improved dumpingcart, and Fig. 2 a plan of the same with certain unessential portions removed.
In the said drawings, A represents the shafts and B the body, of the cart. The body B, when in its lowest position, rests on the shafts A and is contin ed sidewise between the slotted standards D,which are erected on the shafts. Studs E on the sides of the body enter the slots a of the standards and are connected to chains b, which pass over sheaves c in the slots of the standards and down to grooved winding-drums F. These winding-drumsare on a shaft G, running across and under the shafts A and confined in suitable bearingboxes. (Not shown.)
To the outer ends of the shaft G are secured toothed pinions I-I, iu gear with toothed sectors I on a shaft J, supported under the shafts in like manner to the shaft G, before alluded to. These sectors are each provided with a socket e, into which a lever K is fastened. The upper ends of the levers K are attached by means of chains e to windingdrums L on the shaft M, and the windingdrums are provided with ratchet-teeth f and 'pawls g, to hold the winding-drums in any position in which they may be placed. One of vthe shafts M is adapted to receive a crankhandle, whereby it may be turned by hand to hoist the body, as will hereinafter appear.
N is a slotted link pivoted to one of the shafts A at 7i, and c' is a stud which projects from the side of the body and through the slot of the link. The end of the stud is threaded and provided with a threaded handle 7'.
The body B is furnished with the usual chute for conducting the coal as discharged to some desired point; but this chute is not shown, asl it is no part of my invention.
The body of the cart is elevated by winding the chain e on the Winding-drums by means of the crank-handle before alluded to. In winding the chain the levers are drawn back, and in this movement the toothed sectors effect the rotation. of the pinions H. These pinions, being on the shaft carrying the winding-drums L, the chains e are wound thereon and the body of the cart lifted.
The tilting of the body into a position similar to that indicated by its dotted delineation in Fig. l is effected by tightening the stud t' by means of the handle j, which has the effect of preventing further elevation vof the body at that point. may begin with the elevation of the body or at any time during the elevating operation.
I claim as my invention- Ina dumping coal-cart, the shafts A, having slotted standards, and sheaves in the slots of the standards and near their top, combined with the body having studs which enter the slots ot' the standards, a shaft secured under the shafts, carrying toothed pinions and winding-drums, another shaft carrying toothed sectors in gear with the said pinions and also sockets, levers which project from the sockets, a third shaft carrying windingdrums and ratchet-teeth, and chains to connect the last-named winding-drums with the upper ends of the levers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
WM. T. HOWARD, i DANI.. FISHER.
