Beit known that I, THOMAS PHI LOP OWEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in permutationpadlocks.
The object of the invention is to produce a new and improved combination-padlock of great simplicity and cheapness that will successfully defy any attempt made to unlock it, either by picking or otherwise, by any one unfamiliar with the combination.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to produce a padlock that is strong and compact and not liable to get out of order or be come broken by use.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the padlock. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the padlock, the back plate being removed, and showing the position of the parts when the padlock is open. Fig. 8 is a similar view illustrating the position of the parts when locked.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the casing of the padlock,
consisting of the front plate, a, the side piece, a, and the back plate, 66-, made of suitable material. The side piece, a, extending around the edges of the front plate, a, and suitably secured thereto, is slightly curved at the upper right hand corner of the plate, which it crosses and leaves sufficient space for the pivotal end of the hasp B, which is journaled in the ordinary manner in the front and back plates, a and a An operatinglever, G, which actuates the bolt D, is pivoted in the center of the front plate, a, and the pivot E terminates in a knob of any desired configuration, which knob E is adapted to move the operating-lever back and forth to carry the bolt D in and out of engagement with the hasp B, and also to cause dogs 6 and e, placed on opposite sides and ends of the operating-lever G, to enter slots f and f in the circu mferences of disks F and F,located, respectively,at oppositecorners ofthepadlock.
I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings only one disk, placed contiguous to each end of the operating-lever C; but it will readily be seen that any number may be employed, the said disks to be rotated in the usual manner and for the usual purpose by pins on their surfaces.
The disks F and F are mounted on pivots f andf, which terminate in knobs J andf either integral or otherwise with said pivots. These knobs f and f are provided, in the usual manner, with a series of marks which register with a similar series of marks on the front plate. The formation of the combinations and the manner of operating the same are those well known in the art.
The bolt D, working in the way formed by the side of the casing a and a suitable pin or pins, or similar means, is provided with an indentation or cavity, (1, conforming to the configuration of the head 0 of the lever O, which is adapted to carry the bolt in and out of engagement with the free end of the hasp B when the slotsin the circumferences of the disks F and F are made to register with the dogs 6 and 6. On the upper side of the bolt D is a slot or depression, (1, into which projects a pin, a", extending from the side of the casing, limiting the lateral motion of the bolt.
The operation of the padlock is as follows: In order to open the padlock, the disk F is rotated until the slotfin its circumference is brought opposite the dog a of the operatinglever G. Then the disk F is rotated in asimilar manner to bring the slot f opposite the dog e. Then this has been performed, the operating-lever may be moved and the dogs caused to enter the slots of the disks and the bolt simultaneously withdrawn from engagement with the hasp. When it is desired to lock the padlock, it is only necessary to bring the bolt into engagement with the hasp and withdraw the dogs from the slots of the disks, which operations are performed simultaneously with the turning of the knob E,that actuates the operating-lever G, and then rotate the disks to carry the slots out of line with the dogs, and the device is locked.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a padlock, the combination of the disks or series of disks located at opposite 5 corners of the padlock and provided with slots, a bolt provided with an indentation or cavity for the reception ofan end ofan operating-lever, and an operating-lever provided at each end and on opposite sides with a dog, said operat- IO ing-lever being capable of causing the dogs either to enter or leave the slots in the disks, and of simultaneously operating the bolt, substantially as set forth. v
