METALLIC PASTENER. No. 891,050. Patented Oct. 16, 1888.

N. PErERS. PhowLixhn n mr. Washmglon, D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAV HILLER, OF ZITTAU, SAXO'NY, GERMANY.
METALLIC FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,050, dated October 16, 1888.
(X0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV HILLER, a subject of the King of Saxony, German Empire, residing at the city of Zittau, in the Kingdom of Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a means for securing the severed ends of cord, braid, ribbon, and similar fabrics in order to prevent the raveling, fraying, or untwisting of the same.
It is well known that thick and heavy cords such as are used by makers of passementerie, npholsterers, tailors, and persons of similar occupation1nust have their ends secured after being cut, in order to prevent the raveling, fraying, or untwisting of the severed ends. This has been done in various ways, such as tying knots in the severed ends or binding said ends with thread or wire wrapped around them. The binding of the ends occasions loss of time, and the knotting of the ends necessitates a waste of material, wliich'is an important consideration in the case of expensive cords or fabrics. These disadvantages are obviated in this invention by means of metallic clamps for binding the severed ends, which clamps may be applied to said ends simultaneously with the act of cutting the cord. This may be accomplished by means of an instrument which forms the subject of my application for Letters Patent, No. 27 0,016, filed April 9, 1888, or by any other suitable means.
The invention will be understood on reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an edge view, and Fig. 2 a top view, of a clamp constructed according to my invention. Fig. 3 is an edge view, and Fig. 4 a top view, of a similar clamp having its edges provided with spurs or teeth. Fig. 5 is a section taken in the line 00 m of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 shows two severed ends bound with the metallic clamps. Fig.7 is an end view of a cord bound with the clamp shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 8 is a similar view of a cord bound with the clamp shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.
The clamp shown in Figs. 1 and 2 consists of a metallic strip, h, which is nearly divided into two parts by two longitudinal slits, i i, which extend from the ends of the strip toward the mid-length thereof, leavinganarrow bridge, h, between the inner ends of the slits and in the center of the strip. The ends of the strip are curved upward, as shown, to facilitate the attachment thereof to the severed ends of the fabric. When a cord is to be cut, one of the strips is placed at the point where the cut is to be made, and the curved ends are pressed around the cord, so as to clamp and firmly bind the ends when cut. This may be done by means of the instrument above referred to, or by any other suitable means.
The clamp shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5is similar to the one above described, with the addition of sharp spurs or teeth h turned up atits edges. The advantage of this construction is that the teeth or spurs engage with the fibers of the cord or fabric and prevent the clamps from being removed from the severed ends Without unbending the strips.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A clamp for binding the severcends of a cord, braid, or similar fabric, consisting of a metal strip, 71, nearly divided into two parts by two longitudinal slits, t 6, connected by a central bridge, h, substantially as herein described.
2. A clamp for binding the severed ends of cord, braid, or similar articles, consisting of a metal strip, h, nearly divided into two parts by two longitudinal slits, i i, but connected by a central bridge, h, and provided with spurs or teeth h at its edges parallel with the aforesaid slits, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GUSTAV HILLER.
