\VILLIAM H. DUNGAN, OF ROOKLANE, INDIANA.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,033, dated October 16, 1888.
Application filed July 11, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H, DUNGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rocklane, in the county of Johnson and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specification.
My irwention relates to improvements in fences, with the object of simplifying and improving the means for adjusting the tension ofthe wires in wire fences, and also in combination wire-and-picket fences; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully set fort-h hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of thestandard andthe post on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view.
In my former patent, No. 852,454, dated November 9, 1886, I have shown a movable standard to which the stretching devices are attached, said movable standard being drawn toward and held to the end post by a tension device.
The object of my present invention is to improve the construction ofthe movable standard by constructing the same of two pieces, instead of one piece, as in my former patent; also, to provide improved means for adjustably connecting the standard to the end post, whereby the slack of the fence can be taken up as it is found necessary.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the end post of the fence, which is provided at suitable points with the horizontal apertures B, in which are arranged the horizontal adjusting-bars O 0, having apertures c c therein.
The movable standard D comprises the parallel bars E F, which are held separated and at the desired distance apart by the partingblocks G G, arranged at intervals. These bars are provided with registering bearings, of a number corresponding to the number of wires which the proposed fence is to contain, and in these bearings are mounted the stretchers I I, of a construction similar to the stretchers shown in'connection with my pre- Serial No. 279,619. (No model.)
vious patent. These stretchers consist of the revoluble shafts K, having one end squared, as at k, to receive a key or wrench, and the series of blades L, the wires M of the fencebeing attached to the said blades and wound on the shafts, as shown and described in my former patent aforesaid.
As the manner of fitting the wires to the stretchers is fully described and shown in my previous patent, and as the construction of the stretchers has not been changed, a repetition of the description herein is unnecessary.
The horizontal adjusting-bars extend between the bars E and F, which compose the movable standard, and the pins N N, which are engaged in the registering apertures c, serve to hold the standard on the bars at any desired point of their length and maintain the standard away from or nearer to the end post.
The operation of constructing the fence is as follows: Having arranged the end post and intermediate posts in the ground, the horizontal adjustingbars are placed in the end post and secured therein by the pins 0, passed through apertures in the rear end of the same. The standard is arranged on the adj usting-bars and adjusted by the pins at the desired point of their length. The ends of the wires are attached, respectively, to the stretchers which are mounted in the standard, and the stretchers are then turned independently to tighten or stretch each wire individually. Small transverse pins P are arranged in registering apertures in the bars E F to lock the stretchers in the desired positions. Any suitable means may be employed to draw the standard toward the post when it is desirable to do so. I usually employ a cant-hook or a lever and chain to draw the standard toward the end post. The standard is drawn until the wires are at the desired tension, when the pin N is removed from its last aperture and placed in an aperture nearer to the standard in its adjusted position and maintaining the tension of the fence. The standard may be adjusted on the bars to take up the slack of the wires due to the expansion or relieve the tension due to the contraction of the wires when the latter are affected by changes of temperature.
The purpose of constructing the standard of two parallel bars instead ofa single bar, as in my former patent, is that I am enabled to re duce the cost of the standard, simplify the attachment of the .stretchers, and make the standard more convenient in use. 5 The purpose of constructing the side bars of the standard of different Widths is for convenience in attaching wires to the stretchers, as the narrow standard allows the hand to be inserted to make the necessary connections.
Having described the invention, I claim- 1. In a fence, the combination, with the stationary post, of the movable standard having the wires connected thereto, the adj ustingbars attached rigidly to the post and passing I 5 between the side bars of the standard, and the adjusting-pins engaging apertures in the adjusting-bars and bearing against the side of the standard, substantially as specified.
2. In a fence, the post A, the movable standard D, the wires, the stretcher's fitted in the 23 standards and having the wires connected thereto, and the adjusting-bars C, fixed rigidly t0 the post A and adj ustably connected to the movable standard, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 25 own I have hereto affixed my signature in pres ence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. DUNGAN.
W'itnesses:
E. G. SIGGERS, MYER COHEN.
