' J. J. SULLIVAN.
SHAGKLE FOR VEHICLE SPRINGS. No. 390,917. Patented Oct. 9, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JEREMIAH JOSEPH SULLIVAN, OF PAWTUGKET, RHODE ISLAND.
SHACKLE FOR VEHICLE-SPRINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 390,917, dated October 9, 1888.
Application filed May 24, 1888. Serial No. 274,998. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-.
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH J OSEPH SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shackles for VehicleSprings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this Specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shackles for attaching the springs of side-bar vehicles to the cross-bars located above the axle, the same being designed to provide an improved shackle and springsupport which can be readily separated to receive a link connected to one end of the side spring; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the parts comprising my invention, showing the same separated.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the application of my improvement.
In the accompanying drawings, A refers to the cross-bar, to which my improved shackle is attached by a clip-bolt, B, which embraces the bar A and passes through openings in the shackle.
The main portion of the shackle O is pro vided on its under side, centrally, with aprojecting nib, 0, adapted to enter a perforation or opening beneath the same in the cross-bar A. The main casting C of the shackle is provided with downwardly-projecting flanges d d, which lie over the edges of the cross-bar. These flanges are swelled outwardly centrally to fit around the ends of the U-shaped bolt B.
One end of the casting O is cut away on its upper edge, as shown at D, and adjacent thereto it has integrally formed a curved projection, E, which forms a U-shaped recess, E, Within which one of the cross-bars of the link F is adapted to lie. Around the opposite cross-bar of this link the end of the side spring is turned, as shown in Fig.3. \Vithin the U- shaped recess E and the cut-away portion D is secured, by one end of the U-shaped bolt B, a plate, G, the end 9 lying in the U-shaped reccss E above the cross bar of the link.
This shackle is simple in construction, and by means of the same side springs can be readily attached and detached Without removing the shackle from the crossbar of the vehicle,
and should the spring become injured or broken it is only necessary to remove one of the nuts from the U-shaped bolt, when the plate G can be removed and the spring detached for repairs.
I am aware that prior to my invention it has been proposed to provide shackles with links to which side springs can be attached, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved shackle for side-spring wagons, consisting of a plate, 0, provided at one end with a transverse U-shaped recess and on the under side with transverse depending flanges d d, and perforations adjacent thereto, a plate, G, having an enlarged end, and an opening through which one of the ends of the U-shaped bolt B passes, so that the plate G can be readily removed without detaching the shackle, substantially as shown.
2. In a shackle for side-spring wagons, the plate 0, having at one end a semicircular recess, openings through which passes a U- shaped bolt, a plate, G, with an enlarged end, adapted to be secured thereto by one of the ends of the clip to retain in position a link, F, the parts being combined substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix mysiguature in presence of two witnesses.
JEREMIAH JOSEPH SULLIVAN.
