To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMEs TINLIN and JULIAN J osnrrr PIATKOWSKI, subjects, re spectively, of the Queen of Great Britain and the Emperor of Austria, and residing at Kamballa'Road, Olapham, in the county of Surrey, and Spencer Street,Goswell Road,in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus to for Compressing Drugs and other Substances,
(the same having been patented in England November 25, 1887, No. 16,239; in France November 24, 1887, No. 187,181; in Belgium November 24, 1887, N0. 79, 658; in Spain Februr ary 18, 1888, No. 7,691; in Italy March 24, 1888, No. 290, Vol. in Sweden December 2, 1887, No. 606, and in Norway December 5, 1887, N0. 793,) of which the following is a specification.
20 This invention relates to that class of apparatus which is employed for compressing drugs or other substances, the compression taking place in holes or recesses formed in a disk which is intermittingly rotated in a horizon- 2 tal plane.
The invention consists in an improved construction and arrangement of parts whereby the rate of production of the compressed goods is materially increased over that of similar machines previously known.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which 5 Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the improved machine. Fig. 2 represents a rear end elevation. Fig. 3 represents a front end elevation. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a plan view of the parts beneath the bed-plate. Fig. 6 repre sents, on a slightly larger scale, a plan view of the intermittently-rotated disk, some of the surrounding parts being in section. Fig. 7
represents, on a slightly larger scale, a side 5 elevation, partlyin section, of the lower lever LII and eccentric which operates the compressing plungers or dies. Fig. 8 represents in side elevation the filler through which the goods to be compressed are fed to the holes in the disk. Fig. 9 is a plan view thereof; and Fig. 10 is an elevation, partly in section, of the guide for the top plunger or die.
In all the figures like letters of reference are used to'indicate like parts of the apparatus.
The substances to be compressed are placed 5 5 in the hopper A, from whence they pass to the filler A, and from there through the hole a to the holes a in the intermittently-rotating disk B, the face of said disk being practically in contact with the bottom of filler A, so as to prevent the substance from the filler flowing out, except when the hole a coincides with one of those, a, in the disk, while beneath the disk is a fixed ring or plate, B, which prevents the substance falling through, said ring only being 6 perforated for the plungers, hereinafter mentioned. The filler-case is loosely mounted in the supporting-piece A which also carries a feed screw, a adapted to engage with the toothed edge of filler A, and thereby adjust the filler so as to bring hole a into or out of line, or partially in or partially out of line, with the travel of holes a, depending upon whether it is desired to, feed the substance rapidly, slowly, or not at all.

As both pulleys B B are stepped, the speed of rotation of the stirrers may be varied as desired,and the band I) be adj ustcd by setting movable plate I), 8 5 which carries the pulleys b b,over which the band runs. A lever, D, pivoted at d, is given a horizontal reciprocating motion from eccentrically peripherally grooved drum E, with which the projecting end or pin d of lever D c engages. The other end of said lever is connected by rod d with slide F, which carries pivoted pawl f, which is held against the periphery of disk 13 by the spring f. As the slide-plate F moves forward, pawl f engages with the notched edge of the disk and partially rotates it, while at the end of the stroke one end of pivoted catch-lever G falls intoa notch and prevents further movement until slide F has returned to the end of its stroke and pawl f is ready to again partially rotate the disk,by
which time pin f has come into contact with the outer end of lever G, and, having overcome the action of spring 9, has withdrawn the catch. An additional catch formed by spring g may be used, if desired. The con1- pressing plungers or dies H H are operated by levers H pivoted on H, the outer ends being actuated by eccentrics on main drivingshaft 0. The top lever H is represented as being operated by connecting-rod H, terminating in two rings, h h, surrounding the two eccentrics. The lower lever 11 is operated by a cam, I, with which a stud on said lever engages, By placing cam I between the eccentrics the top and bottom levers H are kept in the same plane and are practically pivoted on the same post, H, which, for convenience of construction, may be made in two parts,screwed into the bed-plate and together, and held in position by lock-nuts, as most clearly shown in Fig. 7, in which the levers H are represented as having a stroke or leverage of two to one, while in the rest of the figures it is indicated as being even.
The apparatus can of course be constructed with any given amount of leveragc,depending upon the pressure and length of stroke it is desired to obtain. The plungers H H are attached to the levers by toggle-joints h h and set-screws h" h", by which the distance apart of the plunger ends may be regulated. The plungers travel in guides H in which they are kept from rotating by feathers or screws h, and are capable of slight adjustment by means of set-screws h" h, which carry the packing-ring h. Eccentric J operates upon one end of lever J, pivoted atj, the other end of said lever being connected through red J with plate J all side motion of which is prevented by guide-rodj. Plate J carries plungersj j jfl all being set in the line of travel of holes a in the disk.
It being understood that all the parts are driven from the main shaft G,the operation of the machine may be described as follows: The substance to be compressed passes from the hopper A to filler A, thence through hole a into the hole a on the disk immediately beneath. The plungers all being up clear ofthe disk, slide-plate F begins its forward movement, the pawl f carrying the disk around until the catch on lever G falls into one of the notches, by which time the hole just filled has come over plunger H and under plunger H, which are then closing, and between the ends of which the substance is compressed and left in the hole, the hole a next in order at the same time being filled. As the plungcrs withdraw, the slide F again advances and the op eration is repeated until the compressed substance comes under plunger jflwhich forces it from the hole into a suitable box or receptacle placed beneath the disk and bed-plate. At the next downward stroke of plate J the plunger j" passes into the hole just emptied and cleanses it, and at the next stroke plunger j greases or polishes the hole previous touts being again filled, the top of dlsk B be ng also cleaned by passing under wiper K,wh1ch may be made of any suitable material.
\Vhat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a filler, an intermittingly-moved plate having holes to receive the material from the filler, the compressing plungers mounted in guides upon opposite sides of the plate, and the slide F, which moves the plate, of the main driving-shaft carrying the eccentrics h h and the peripherally-grooved drum E, thelevers H H, the rod H between one of the said eccentrics and one of the levers, and the horizontally-pivoted lever D,engaging with the groove in the drum E and connected with the slide F, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a filler, an intermittingly-moved plate having holes to receive the material from the filler, the compressingplungers mounted in guides upon opposite sides of the plate, and the slide F, which moves the plate, of the main driving-shaft carrying the eccentrics h h and J and the peripherallygrooved drum E, the levers 1-1 H operated by the eccentrics h and connected to reciprocate the plungers,the horizontally-pivoted lever D, operated by the drum E and connected to move the slide, the lever J, operated by the eccentric J, and the plungers which remove the material from the holes in the plate and clean the same, operated by the lever J, substantially as described.
3. In a drug-compressing machine,the com bination of an adjustable filler having a discharge-orifice, a rotating disk in contact with the filler and provided with a series of holes, in which the drug is compressed, arranged to move past and register with the discharge orifice in the filler, an adjustingscrew for changing the relations of the discharge-orifice to the holes in the rotating disk, and means for compressing the drug in said holes, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the tiller, an intermittingly-moved plate having holes to re ceive the material from the filler, the compressing-plungers mounted in guides upon opposite sides of the plate, and the slide which moves the plate, of the main driving-shaft carrying the eccentrics h h and J, the drum E, and the pulley B", all arranged side by side, the levers operated by the eccentrics h and connected to reciprocate the plungers, the lesubstantially as described.
