BRICK-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,769, dated December 4, 1883.

To all whom it ntay concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. GRAHAM, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Oar-' lisle, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in brick-machines; and it has for its objects to give the .plunger which forms the brick in the mold an elastic or yielding pressure during the formation or discharge of the brick, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my improved machine, and Fig. 2 a detached view of a portion of my machine.
The letter A indicates the base of the machine, which consists of a metallic plate having a slot, B, through which the cam-wheel 0 works. The said base may be mounted upon masonry or any suitable substructure, D.
E indicates two upright metallic frames, mounted on the base A, being secured thereto in any suitable manner. The frames are provided with bearings for a horizontal transverse shaft, G, upon which is mounted the camwheel 0, before mentioned.
To the top of the frame E is secured a metallic bed or plate, H, which is provided with a mold, I, opening up through the top of the bed or plate, and at each side the bed or plate is provided with ways K, in which is adapted to travel a reciprocating plate, L, carrying a hopper, M.
To the frames E, at one side, are secured the horizontal pillow-blocks N, which form bearings for a transverse horizontal rock-shaft, P, which is provided at one end with an arm, R, having an anti-friction wheel, S, which sets in a cam-slot, T, in a cam-whee1, U, secured to one end of the main or driving shaft, by means of which an oscillating motion is given to the rock-shaft. The rock-shaft is provided with an arm, V, which is slotted at its end and connected to the reciprocating plate above mentioned, in order to give motion thereto.
The letter XV indicates a plunger adapted to move in the mold above mentioned. The lower end of said plunger is slotted and provided with a roller, X, which bears against the periphery of the cam-wheel, as indicated,being held down thereon by means of the springs Y, which are secured to a cross-bar, Z, secured to the pillow-blocks and bearing upon the shaft A of said roller. The cam-wheel is provided with adjustable cams B at proper points. These are hinged or pivoted in recesses G, and are rendered adjustable by means of suitable set-screws, D. Between the loose end of each cam and its seat is located a rubber or other spring, E, by means of which a yielding pressure may be imparted to the plunger.
The operation of my invention will be understood in connection with the above descrip tion, and is as follows: The machine is put in motion by applying powerto the driving-shaft. The clay, properly prepared, is placed in the hopper, and-as the hopper is carried over the mold a proper quantity is discharged into the mold, the plunger being down at the time. Then charged, the plunger rises, forcing the clay against the bottom of the slide and compressing it into a brick, and when the slide has traveled back sufficiently to uncover the mold the brick is discharged upon the bed or plate, from whence it may be removed in any suitable manner.
In order to provide for making bricks of different thicknesses, the mold has secured to it at one side an adjustable link, through which the shaft of the roller passes, the link being capable of adjustment by means of a set-screw, F, so as to give greater or less throw to the plunger, as desired 5 and to permit the brick to readily clear the mold the forward end of the reciprocating plate is slightly beveled, as indicated by the letter G,- in the drawings.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the cam-wheel of a brick-machine, of the adjustable cams and the springs by which a yielding bearing is given to the same, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the cam-wheel provided with adjustable yielding cams, the plunger operated thereby, and the springs by which the plunger is held'to the cam-wheel, substantially as specified.
