GEORGE S. SERGEANT, OF GREENSBOROUGH, NORTH CAROLINA.
TETHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,808, dated October 9,1888.
Application filed July 10, 1888. Serial No. 279,599.
To all whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE S. SERGnAN'r, of Greensborough, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tethers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvementin tethers; and it comprises a standard or stake, a bracket or carrier supported thereon so that it may rotate on or be adjusted along said stake, a pole, and a springconnection which supports the pole and serves as the connection between the said pole and the bracket or carrier of said pole.
The invention consists in the novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I shows the invention as in use. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional elevation of a part of the device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on about line x x, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the bracket, and Fig. 5 illustrates the construction employed when a coiled spring is used.
The stake or standard A maybe of any suitable length, and is, in practice, ordinarily driven in the ground, as will be understood from Fig. l. On this stake I fit the bracket or carrier B, which has eyes bb formed with openings to receive the stake, so that the bracket may turn on or be adj usted up or down on the stake. These eyes b I) are rigidly connected together by the body of the bracket, which body unites the said eyes at one side; but the said eyes are arranged sufficiently apart to form a recess or opening fitted to receive the collar O, which is provided with a clampscrew, c, and serves to secure the bracket in any suitable vertical adjustment on the stake, the collar fitting between the eyes and serving t0 prevent any movement of the bracket up or down, and yet forming no obstruction to the turning of the bracket on the stake, as desired.
By arranging the collar between two eyes of.
the bracket a single collar suffices to' secure the bracket from movement either up or down on the stake, and when the collar is released by loosening the clamp-screw it may be adjusted up or down by the corresponding movement ofthe bracket. The bracket also has an arm,
B', which in the construction shown projects outward and upward at an incline and serves to receive the spring D. By preference this (No model.)
arm B has a curved or inclined bearing-sun face, b, which serves to ease or make gradual the bending of the spring, and thus avoid the abrupt bending of same and the consequent danger of breaking resulting from such abrupt bending.
The spring I) may be formed of a tlat plate, or, preferably, a plurality of such plates titted face to face, as shown in Figs. l and 2, the said plates being secured at one end to the bracket or carrier and at their outer ends to thepole E. The pole E also has a rounded or inclined bearing-surface, e', similar to the surface b', and for a similar purpose-namely, to prevent the abruptbending of the spring. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the said surface c is formed on a socket-piece secured to the pole.
It will be understood that where desired a coil-spring, as shown in Fig. 5, may be used, such spring being provided at its ends with stems or Shanks fitted and secured in suitable sockets or openings provided on the carrier or bracket and on the pole. As stated above, the dat plate or plates may be preferred.
The bolts F, for securing the springs to the pole, have their heads f elongated laterally and Vformed to brace the pole, to prevent any splitting of same.
In use the tethering-rope may be secured to the outer end of the pole, as will be understood from Fig. l.
The construction is simple, inexpensive, can be easily adjusted for use, and possesses no parts likely to be easily broken or to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is* I.V An improved tether comprising the pole, the bracket or carrier, and the spring extended between and fixed to said bracket and, pole, a bearing being provided for the spring adjacentits end or ends, such bearing being rounded or inclined in the direction of length of the spring, substantially asset forth.
2. In atether, the combination of the bracket or carrier having a rounded or inclined surface, b, the pole having rounded or inclined surface e', and the spring extended between and xed to both the bracket and the pole, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-described improved tether,
IOO
comprising the stake, the bracket jonrnaled and revolving on the said stake, a spring having one end xed rigidly to thebrack et, whereby it may support the pole on its opposite or outer end, and whereby the said spring may turn or move around the stake, and the pole secured to and supported on the outer end of the spring, substantially as set forth.
4. The improvement in tethers consisting of the stake, the bracket provided with eyes perforated to lit on the stake and separated i'roineaeh other, the collar fitted and secured on the stake between the eyes of the bracket, such collar being formed to it snugly between the eyes ofthe bracket, whereby to preventsaid bracket from moving u p or down on the stake, the pole, and connections, substantially as set forth.
5. The improved tether comprising the bracket, a spring consisting of a number of flat spring-plate strips held at one end to the bracket, and the pole held at its inner end to and supported on the outer ends of the said strips, substantially as set forth.
6. The improved tether herein described, consisting of the stake, the bracket having eyes separated to receive the fastening-collar between them and perforated for the passage of the stake, such bracket having a lateral arm curved on its upper side, the fasteningeollar, the pole having its innerend curved onits upper side, and the spring secured to said bracket and pole, substantially as set forth.
7. As an im provementin tethers, the bracket having bearings or openings by which it may be jourualed on the stake, and provided with a lateral arm, the spring fixed at its inner end rigidly to the said lateral arm, and the pole supported on the outer end 0f the spring, all substantially as set l'orth.
