UNITED STATES JAMES C. LYNCH, OF HARRISON, NEV JERSEY.
BAG-HINGE STAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed June B, NSS.
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES C. LYNCH, acitizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jer- 5 sey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BagIIinge Stays; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1o it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The purpose of this invention is to provide abag-hinge stay which is of simple and strong construction; and it consists of the ordinary hinge applied to bag-frames, having a supplementary hinge or hinged locking-arm pivotally attached to one of the hinged plates or leaves of the main hinge, and which is adapted to be turned into holding engagement with a stop or iiat surface on the main hinge-joint, thus holding open the mouth of the bag until released from such engagement. The devices which have heretofore been used for this purpose, having supplementary hinges, have been of such construction as to be very difficult to manipulate the same, particularly when the parts were not Well fitted.
My improved device is designed to remedy this difficulty and to provide a hinge-stay which can be secured to the bag-frame with comparatively little labor, and which can be made economically.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar letters of reference are used to indicate corresponding parts in each of the views, Figure l is a plan of an opened bagframe and the hinge-stay in its locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar but enlarged view of the hinge in its unlocked position. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of' Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are a plan and an end elevation, respectively, of the hinge in its locked position; and Fig. 6 is a section taken through line x, Fig. 2. Figs. 7 and 8 are plan views of another form of hingestay in its unlocked and locked position, respectively. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 8, and Fig. l0 is a side 5o elevation of a hinge having a modied form of Patent NQ. 390,609, dated October 2, 1888.
Serial No.276,498. (No model.)
sists of two portions, the main hinge A and the supplementary hinge or hinged lockingarm B. The hinge portions orleaves a and a ofthe main hinge A are adapted to be riveted or secured in any convenient manner to the ends of the frame-sections C and C' of the bag. The hinge portion or leaf a is provided with hinge-joints or ears a2 a2, to which is pivotally secured said locking arm B by means of the pin b.
To cause the locking engagement of the hinged locking-arm B with the hinge-joint of thehingeA,thelockingarm, whichisindicated in the drawings by the letter b', is turned on its pivotal pin b", causing the end b2 of the arm b to come into engagement with the flat surface a of the hinge-joint of the hinge A, thus locking the same and causing the holding open of the mouth of the bag.
To manipulate the hinged locking-arm* B more easily, a finger-piece, b3, is secured thereon in any suitable manner. As indicated in Fig. 6, the joint part of the hinged lockingarm B is provided with asharp corner or edge, b5, on its under side, which rests against the hinge-plate a and holds said hinge in a horizontal position when unlocked and prevents the same from hanging down within the mouth of the bag, substantially as indicated in said Fig. 6.
The construction shown in Figs. 7, 8, and 9 is of such form that the arm b is formed of one straight piece, instead of curved, as shown in Fig. l, et seq., and is provided with a projecting finger on the end, as shown. In said lastnamed views, as a modification, the hingejoints or ears a2 a? may be placedat a point farther away from the main joint of the hinge A, as will be understood from the drawings. Said joints a2 a2 may also be placed on either of the hinge-plates a and a', or the ears a2 may be formed on the hinge-plate or leaf d and engage With the hinge Ijoint on the leaf a, as will be understood.
The hinge-joint shown in Fig. 10 may be formed with an additional fiat surface, a4, which enables the operator to lock the hinge at a small angle; or said joint may be provided with any number of such fiat surfaces, which enables the operator to hold open the frame sections of the bag at any convenient angle, asis evident.
IOO
By the form of locking device thus set forth there is no danger of pinching the fingers, as is common in the locking devices most con1 nionly used in operating the same. Therefore,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is" 1. A bag-hinge provided with an arm pivotally secured to one of the leaves thereof and adapted and arranged to be turned into and from engagement with a flat surface formed on the rounded outside ofthe eye of the other leaf of said hinge at thejoint thereof, for the purposes set forth.
2. A hinge consisting of the portions a and a', one of which, a, has a locking-arm, B, pivotally attached thereto, said locking-arm being adapted to engage with a fiat surface, a3, on the joint of the portion a to lock said hinge, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. lIhe combination, with the frame sections of a bag, of the hinge A, consisting of the hinged portions a and a', one of which, a, is provided with ears a, the other of which, a, is provided with a flattened surface, a3, at the joint, and an L-shaped locking-arm pivoted to said ears and adapt ed to engage with said dat surface a and lock said hinge when open, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
4. A hinge consisting of the hinged portions a and a', one of which, a, is provided with ears a2, the other of which, a', is provided with a flattened surface, a, at the joint thereof, and a lockingarni pivoted to said ears and adapted to be turned into and from engagement with said dat surface formed on the joint of the other leaf, 'for the purposes set forth.
5. The combination, with the frame-sections of a bag-frame and hinged leaves or plates secured to said sections forming the bag-hinge, one of said leaves having a stop on the eye thereof, of a bag-hinge stay consisting of an arm pivoted to one of said hinged plates and engaging with the stop on the eye of the other hinged plate to lock the hinge when turned for that purpose, as set forth.
In testimony that I claini the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of June, 1888.
