S. J. WOEL-FLY.
HARNESS TERRET.
No. 390,542. Patented Oct. 2, 1888.
WITNESSES INVENTOR Aim I v M N PETEHS. Photo-Lithognuher. Washington. ac,
UNITED STATES PATENT SIMON J. WOELFLY, OF LEBANON, PENNSYLVANIA.
HARNESS TERRET.
$PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,542, dated October 2, 1888.
Application filed July 7, 1888. Serial No. 279,285).
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMON J. WOELFLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Terrets for Harness, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a terret-hool provided with means whereby the end of a hitching strap or rein may be readily and reliably held without necessarily securing or looping it on the terret, as heretofore practiced, and also allowing the detaching of said end in a quick and convenient manner.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a terret embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a portion thereof taken from the upper right-hand corner of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section on line m 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding pzfrts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a terret, which, excepting the feature of my in vention applied thereto, is ofwell-known form and construction. Connected with and rising from the base 0 is a clamp or clamping'arm, 3, which extends in front of the terret and is curved to conform to the curvature of the wall of the terret, said clamp being elastic, so as to be capable of springing to and from the terret, and thus reduce and enlarge the space between their opposite faces. On the front wall of the terret is a tongue, D, which is of the form of a bead approximately an inverted-V shape in cross-section, so as to present a biting edge toward the rear of the clamp.
In practice the several parts enumerated are cast in one piece of metal.
The operation is as follows: When it is de- (No model.)
sired to hold the end E of a hitching-strap, checkrein, or line, said end is inserted between the clamp and the terret and forced downwardly, whereby the clamp yields to permit this as the end descends. When the end is in position, it will be found to be forcibly nipped or held by the contiguous or opposite parts, and thus surely retained as desired. In order to remove the end, it is withdrawn by force sufficient to overcome the holdingpower'of the clamp, the latter yielding and releasing the end, as is evident.
I am aware that it is not new to construct a terret with a clamp actuated by a spring and adapted to hold between it and the main portion of the terret a strap; but I am not aware of the construction herein described prior to me wherein the portion of the terret adjacent to the clamp is formed with a tongue of the shape of an inverted V, so that the strap is more securely held. Neither is it believed to be old to form said clamp integral with the terret and spring or elastic, as described.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Aterret with an elastic clamp portion formed integral therewith and adapted to hold a strap between said clamp and the periphery of the main portion of the terret, substantially as described.
2. A terret having its front wall provided with a tongue of approximately a V shape and having a springclamp integral with the main portion thereof, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
SIMON J. W OELFLY.
