A principle object of the present invention is to pro vide a convertible bed sofa which is of improved design so that it can be more readily changed between day and night uses. I
Another objectis to provide a convertible bed sofa which includes a storage space therebeneath for holding bed sheets, bed pillows and blankets during a day and which holds the sofa back rest pillows at night, so to eliminate need of extra closet space.
Still another object is to provide a convertible bed sofa which includes aremovable arm rest tray that can serve either as a writting table, book rest, or support for dishes and drinking glasses to persons while seated on the sofa.
Other objects are to provide a convertible bed sofa which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the invention in position for use as a sofa, and shown with skirt and back rest cover added so to cover all metal bed frames.
FIG. 2 is a diagramatic cross section on line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a diagramatic cross section similar to FIG. 2 and showing the invention made up as a bed.
FIG. 4 is a cross section in directiion 44 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 5 is an enlarged cross section of details when the invention is in the position shown in FIG. 3.
FIG. 6 is a view of mechanism that is located at each end of the device.
FIG. 7 is a view of the push rod.
FIG. 8 is a view of one end of the seat frame.
FIG. 9 is a cross sectional view on line 99 of FIG.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the reference numeral 10 represents a convertible bed-sofa according to the present invention wherein there is a station ary frame 11 consisting of right and left side walls 12 and 13 interconnected by front and rear angle iron bars 14 and 15 respectively.
The frame 11 supports a rear and front bed-spring l6 and 17, each bed spring having a mattress l8 and 19 respectively.
Each of the side walls 12 and 13 includes a horizontal groove 20 in which a roller 21 of frame 17 is slidable. Also a roller 22 of frame 16 is slidable in the groove 20 when the frame is in a horizontal bed position. A notch 23 allows roller 22 to enter the groove 20 when the sofa bed is being assembled in a factory, as best shown in FIG. 6.
The frame 16 also includes a roller 24 at each end which is slidable in a groove 25, the groove being generally vertical with a slight upwardly rearward incline, in order that when the frame 16 is supported with roller 24 therein while roller 22 is at a rear end of groove 20, the back rest 26 thus formed thereby (as shown in FIG. 1) is comfortable for persons to lean against while the present invention is in the converted position of a sofa 27. The upper end of the groove opens out on the upper edge 28 of each side wall 12. The upper edge 28 of each end wall 12 is fitted with a cover plate 29 so to cover the upper end of groove 25 and notch 23, so to make a final finished and more pleasing appearance to thesofa 26.
It is to be noted that the mattress 18 is securely fastened to the frame 16 by means of hooks 30, permanently affixed to the mattress, and which hooks up with the wire mesh 31 of the frame, thus preventing the mattress to fall off the frame when the frame is in the slightly rearward tilted upright position shown in FIG. 2.
When the frame. 16 is in the upright position of FIG. 2, the roller 24 is in a lower portion of groove 25. When the sofa is intended to be converted into a double bed 32, the frame 16 is pivoted forwardly above the roller 24 at each end of the frame, thus causing the rollers 24 to climb up into an upper portion of the grooves 25 in each side wall 12 and 13, and the rollers 22 at a same time thus traveling forwardly within the grooves 20, as shown in FIG. 3. When the frame 16 is thus forwardly pivoted to form the bed, the frame comes to a stop in a horizontal position-by resting upon bracket 33 secured to each end wall 12 and 13. In order to prevent the frame 16 to accidently start tipping from a horizontal to the vertical upright position when a sleeping person rolls over so that his weight is shifted over the rollers 24, a support structure 34 is provided to support rollers 24.
The support structure 34 in each end wall 12 and 13 includes a horizontal tubular sleeve 35 in which a metal rod 36 is slidable. A forward end of the rod has a knob 37 located adjacent a front edge 38 of the side wall so that it can be conveniently grasped by a person. A rear end of the rod is tapered to a point 39. The length of the rod is such so that when the knob is pushed in against the edge 38, the tapered end 39 is located directly under the roller 24 (as shown in FIG. 5) so that it rests thereupon, thus preventing accidental tilting of the frame 16 when in a bed position. When a person wishes to convert the present invention between a sofa and a bed, he simple pulls on knobs 37 so to pull rods 36 slightly forwardly, thus allowing the rollers 24 to be cleared by rod ends 39 so to move up or down the grooves 25, after which the knob is again pushed in so to be out of the way for being bumped against by a persons leg.
The frame 17 supporting mattress 19 forms a seat 40 for the invention when in a sofa position. When in use as a bed, the frame 17 is pulled forwardly, as shown in FIG. 3 so to allow space for the frame 16 to swing down to the above described horizontal position thereof. Frame 17 is easily moved forwardly, by means of its rear portion being supported on the rollers 21 while its front is supported upon a pair of legs 41 resting upon casters 42 for easy rolling across a floor. A guide roller 43 mounted near a front of the side wall prevents the frame rubbing against the side wall while being moved so that the operation is relatively friction free and effortless. When the frame 17 is pulled fully forward, to clear the frame 16, as shown in FIG. 3, the roller 22 abuts against a forward end of the groove 20. When the frame 17 is pushed in to form the sofa seat, a pair of hooks 44 pivoted on pins 45 of the legs 41 are swinged downward so to hook around the angle iron bar 14 thus locking the frame so to prevent it to accidently slide forward.
When in a sofa position, the frame 16 is prevented from accidently tilting forwardly by means of a pair of tension coil springs 46 secured at one end to the bar 14, and secured at their other end to frame 16, thus urging it against pivoting forwardly. A bracket 47 carrying a freely rotatable roller 48 guides the spring 46 across the top of the bar 15, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 6.
When used as a sofa, pillows 49 are placed against a front side of the upright frame 16 which is first covered by a slip cover 50 so to hide the meta] framework of the frame .16 and the mattress 18. A slip cover 51 together with skirt 52 covers the mattress l9 and the metal work of frame 17 and legs 41. When not in use, pillows 49 fit under the bed, as shown in FIG. 3.
Each end wall 12 and 13 includes an arm rest 53 having vertical opening 54 therethrough aligned with opening 55 of cover plate 29 and opening 56 in the end wall so to removably receive a metal rod 57 secured to underside ofa tray 58, that can serve as a table to hold papers, books, ash trays or food dishes and drinking glasses.
Thus a convertible bed sofa is provided.
