Description
DRUM TUG.
' Patented Oct. 2, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEieE.
WALTER F. FOLEY, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS, AND CHARLES F.' WILBUR, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONNECTICUT.
DRUM-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,469, dated October 2, 1888. Application filed September 9, 1887. Renewed July 16. 1588. Serial No. 280.122. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, \VALTER F. FOLEY, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, and CHARLES F. WILBUR, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented 'cer tain new and useful Improvements in Drum- Tugs; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drum provided with our improved tugs. Fig. 2 is a view, on an enlarged scale, of the tug seen from the outside. Fig. 3 is a view of the tug seen from the inside, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View of the tug, taken on line 00 a2, Figs. 2 and 3, and showing the ropes or strings in the tug.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to tugs for drums having a loop sliding upon the straining strings or cords, by means of which tugs the heads of the drum may be tightened or loosened; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a tug, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The tugs usually employed in drums having straining strings or ropes consist of a closed loop or sleeve having a tongue, by means of which it may be drawn down upon the strings; and in the case of one of these loops breaking or being injured it is necessary to remove the strings from the drum for the purpose of removing the injured tug and inserting a new tug as the two adjoining strings are drawn through the loop, and for the purpose of avoiding this removal of the strings we have constructed a tug in which the loop is provided with suitable stiffening-backing, which will admit of the loop being made with an aperture in the back, with which it may slip upon the strings, so that the loop may be placed in position and removed without interfering with the strings of the drum, as we shall now proceed to describe.
In the accompanying drawings, the numerals 1 indicate the strings of the drum, which are arranged in the usual manner. The tugs 2 are composed of a plate, 3, of sheet metal, or of any suitable material, which may be bent to form two flat hooks or flanges, 4-, at the ends, of sufficient strength to hold the strings to gether. The flap or tongue 5 is made of leather, and the upper portion, 6, of the tongue forms a lining for the plate, being seen red to the inside of the bent plate by means ofa rivet, 7, passing through the leather and through the middle of the plate. It will now be seen that the tug may he slipped upon the strings by passing the strings through the aperture be tween the bent ends of the leather-lined plate, and the tug may be drawn down upon the strings for tightening them and upward for the purpose of loosening them by drawing upon the tongue or flap in the usual manner.
The metallic plate, which may be cut into any suitable ornamental shape, and which may be ornamented in any desired manner, will strengthen the tug, causing it to be more durable than the leather tugs generally used, and by having the opening in its back it may be easily slipped on or off the strings.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A drumtug having a metallic plate at its upper end bent to form two flat hooks or lips for grasping the strings, and having a tongue or flap, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a drum tug, the combination of a metallic plate bent to form. two flat hooks or flanges, with an opening between them, with a tongue or flap of leather or similar material having its upper portion secured within the bent plate, forming a lining for the same,as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. In a drum-tug, the combination of a me tallic plate bent to form two flat hooks or inwardly-curving flanges at the sides, forming an opening between them, a tongue or flap of leather or similar material having its upper portion forming a lining for the metallic plate, and a rivet passed through the middle of the plate and of the lining, securing the latter within the former, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signa- 15 tures in presence of two witnesses.
XVALTER F. FOLEY. CHARLES F. WILBUR.
