To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DANIEL A. DIoKiNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sectional steamboilers, and more particularly to that class employed in connection with steamheating apparatus; and it consists in the construction of the independent generating chambers, whereby the circulation of the water is maintained and the generation of the steam accelerated, as hereinafter shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
This invention is an improvement on Patent No. 356,103, granted to me January 18, 1887.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view in crosssection on the line X X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of one of the sectional generating-chambers detached. Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line Y Y of Fig. 3.
A represents the walls or casing, which may be of any material or form of construction, but which will generally be of brick, and in which the furnace and boiler are embedded, as shown.
B represents the fire-pot, which will be formed in independent hollow sections, as shown, forming, when placed in position, the fire-pot of the furnace.
From each of the fire-pot sections a branch pipe, a, leads upward and is connected to a branch, 5, projecting downward from hollow segmental sections G, as shown, the series of sections equaling in number the sections of the fire-pot, and when placed in position, as shown in Figs. land 2, the sections form a series of flat hollow disks. of these sections 0, when in position, are substantially in contact with each other, but do not quite reach the inner surface of the inclosing-wall A, while the next set of sections above are in contact at their outer rims with the interior surface of the surrounding walls, but are not in contact at their centers, leaving openings (1 through the center of each alternate disk formed by the sections, so that the products of the combustion arising from the firepot are caused to take a zigzag course through and around the sections and The lowermost set (No model.)
come in contact with every part, and also with the main generatingchamber D above them. The separate sections composing the disks are not united to each other, but the sections are united perpendicularly by branches 2), having flanges N, by which they are bolted or other wise fastened together.
If preferred, each of the disks composed of the sections may be cast in one piece. The upper set of the sections 0 are similarly united to the generating-chamber D, as shown. By this means the different sections of the firepot B, the sections 0, and the generating chamber D are all united, while at the same time the fire-pot sections and the generator are still further united by connecting-tubes E, embedded in the brick-work A, as shown.
Within each of the branches b, and also passing through each of the sections 0, be-
opening into the interior of the sections near g their outer rims. The generating-chamber D also has a series of internal tubes, 5 one for each of the tubes b, and adapted to rest opposite the latter when in position, as shown in Fig. 1.
The ends of all the tubes are adapted to be in contact when the branches 1) are united by the flanges 71 so that together they form a continuous tube within the branches I), as shown, these auxiliary tubes b with their branches 1), insuring a perfect, rapid, and free circulation throughout all the interiors of all of sections 0, thereby preventing the formation andaccumulation of steam at any one point more than another, and also preventing the burning of any of the parts by reason of the failure of the water to freely circulate thereon.
The steam generating in the several sections will pass up to the chamber D through the large branches or pipes I), while the water is returned from the chamber D to the generating-sections C through the auxiliary tubes 6 b b The lower surfaces of the sections 0 will be formed inclining downward and inward toward the branches 1) from all directions, so that the proper drainage will be insured, and the outer rims of each of the sections will be enlarged, as shown at 6, so as to provide for an increased space for the circulation. Each section with its branches and auxiliary circulating-pipes will generally be formed in one piece, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, thereby greatly simplifying the construction and requiring fewer joints to connect the parts, although if found desirable for purpose of construction the auxiliary pipes may be made separately and set in sockets prepared for them.
I-Iaving'thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a steamgenerator, alternating horizontal circular disks and annular disks formed of a series of hollow segmental sections, 0, united by branches 1) and having circulating internal tubes, 1), with conduits Z), leading therefrom to the interior of the sections,whereby the circulation of the water is accelerated within and throughout said sections, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a steamgenerator, alternating horizontal circular disks and annular disks formed of a series of hollow segmental sections, 0, united by branches I), each section and its branches having internal circulating-tubes, b, and conduits b, segmental fire-pot B, and gen erator D, united to said disks, substantially as shown and described, whereby a free and rapid circulation of the water is maintained and the generation of the steam accelerated.
