An object of this invention is to provide an easily portable smokers-article comprising a small boxabout the size and shape ,of a package of cigarettes and constructed and arranged so that when not in use there is nothing projecting from the box, thereby making it convenient for carrying it in ones pocket or purse without the risks of damage or spillage, or the danger of a partbeing broken off or causing an injury to the person so carrying .the article.
This is accomplished by providing a box or case having a tank for holding a quantity ofliquid, usually water, and having sockets for a removable-cigarette holder and a removable mouthpiece, each of which is shaped to project laterally from the box. The socket for the cigarette holder is connected with a tube having an open end terminating adjacent the bottom of the tank. The socket for the removable mouthpiece opens into the upper portion of the tank above the level of the water in the tank.
When the mouthpiece and cigarette holder are placed in their respective sockets, the user, drawing on the mouthpiece, will cause air (and smoke when the cigarette is lit) to flow through the cigarette down through the tube in the tank, through the water to the air chamber above the water and the mouthpiece into the users mouth, the smoke being cooledin passing through the water.
When the user has finished smoking, the mouthpiece and the cigarette holder are removed from their sockets and the sockets are closed against the escape of the water by stopper means, preferably in the form of a strip having two plugs spaced apart to simultaneously engage the spaced sockets in the tank, the plugs and the strip being preferably formed integral.
After the mouthpiece and cigarette holder are removed from their respective sockets and the stopper means positioned in the sockets, the mouthpiece and the cigarette holder are placed in a compartment in the box for safekeeping.
A latchable hinged lid closes the compartment and covers the stopper means and holds the latter in place against accidental removal.
When the article is in use, the stopper means may be conveniently carried in the compartment from which the mouthpiece and cigarette holder were removed.

As shown in the accompanying drawings, the portable smokers-article of the present invention is designed for use in smoking cigarettes and comprises a case 10 which may be made ofmetal or plastic material and which is rectangular in crosssection having front and rear walls 11 and side walls 12. The interior of the casing is'dividedv by a partition 13 to form compartments 14 and 15.- The compartment 15 is made to slidably fit and receive a rectangular tank 16 having a top 17 formed to provide two sockets 18 and 19 having a slight taper to receive and hold tapered stoppers 20 which preferably project from a flat strip 21 which lieson the top of the tank and unites the stoppers 20 for insertion as a unit into the sockets 18 and 19 to retain a quantityof liquid, usually plain water, which may be placed in the tank 16 through the sockets 18 and 19.
When the stoppers 20 are removed from the tank, the water in the tank may be substantially drained there from through a hole in the top 17 of the tank'16 after removal of a screw 23.
The tapered socket 18 has a tube 24 extending down wardly in the fluid in the tank and has its open bottom end 25 spaced from the bottom 26 of the tank. At its upper end the socket 18 is formed to fit and removably receive the tapered end 27 of a cigarette holder 28 which has a bend to extend laterally beyond the adjacent side edge of the case.
The tapered socket 19 is made to fit and removably receive the tapered end 29 of "a mouthpiece 30 which has a bend to extend laterally beyond the adjacent side of the case sufficiently so that the mouthpiece may be taken between the lips of the user without interference with the case. The sockets are flush with the top of the tank.
When the stoppers 20 have been removed from the sockets 18 and 19, the cigarette holder 28 and the mouthpiece 30 are removed from the compartment 14 and the mouthpiece 30 is placed in the socket 19, while the cigarette holder 28, with a cigarette placed therein, is placed in the socket 18. Water having been placed in the tank 16 to the level indicated by the water line 32, the user draws air through the mouthpiece and this, in the known manner, causes smokeborne air to be drawn through the cigarette down the tube 24 and into the water. The smoke, being washed and cooled by the water, escapes through the water into the space 33 above the water line 32 and into the mouthpiece 30 and the mouth of the smoker. In subsequent drafts on the mouthpiece 30, the smoke-laden air in the cooling space 33 is drawn through the mouthpiece into the users mouth.
By having the mouthpiece 3t) and cigarette holder 28 projecting laterally from the case, the article would be cumbersome to carry in ones pocket. Therefore, according to the present invention, the cigarette holder and mouthpiece may be removed from the sockets 18 and 19 respectively and be placed in the compartment 14 as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3.
When smoking is discontinued, the user may remove the cigarette holder 28 and the mouthpiece 30 from their respective sockets l8 and 19. Then, the stoppers are removed from the storage compartment 14 and placed in the sockets l8 and 19 to seal the tank against leaking. Then, when the mouthpiece 30 and cigarette holder 28 are placed in the compartment 14, the lid 34 is closed and latched in place, holding the stoppers 20 in position against accidental movement which might cause the water in the tank to spill out.
To avoid the inadvertent placing of the mouthpiece 30 in the cigarette holder 28, the socket 18, as shown in FIG. 1, is made smaller than the end 29 of the mouthpiece.
Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of the claims and portions of the improvement may be used without others.
1 claim:
1. A portable smokers-article comprising a case havving a tank for holding a quantity of liquid, said tank having an access opening forming a socket, a mouthpiece removably mounted in said socket, said tank having a second access opening forming a socket, a cigarette holder removably mounted in said second socket, said second socket having a tube extending into said tank and terminating near the bottom of said tank, said casing having a storage compartment having space to removably receive and hold said cigarette holder and said mouthpiece when removed from their respective sockets, and stopper means removably insertable in said access openings to prevent said liquid from leaking from said tank when the article is not in use, said storage compartment having space to removably receive said stopper means when not in use.
2. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 1 in which said case has a lid hinged thereto and positioned to cover said stopper means and close said storage compartment when the article is not in use.
3. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 2 in which said case is rectangular and has long and narrow sides and said lid is hinged to one of said long sides to lie flat against said side of the case when the article is in use.
4. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 1 in which the outlets of said sockets are substantially flush with the top of said tank.
5. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 1 in which said mouthpiece has a plug portion shaped to fit its socket and a bit portion extending substantially at right angles from said plug portion.
6. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 1 in which said cigarette holder has a plug portion shaped to fit its socket.
7. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 1 in which said mouthpiece has a plug portion shaped to fit its socket and a bit portion extending substantially at right angles from said plug portion and said cigarette holder has a plug portion shaped to fit its socket.
8. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 5 in which the case is rectangular and the plug portion on said mouthpiece is rotatably supported by said socket so that it may extend from either the long or the narrow sides of the case.
9. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 6 in which the case is rectangular and the plug portion on said cigarette holder is rotatably supported by its socket so that it may extend from either the long or the narrow sides of the case.
10. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 7 in which the case is rectangular and the plug portion on said mouthpiece is rotatably supported by its socket so that it may extend from either the long or the narrow sides of the case and the plug portion on said cigarette holder is rotatably supported by its socket so that it may extend from either the long or the narrow sides of the case.
11. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 7 in which one of the holders and a corresponding one of the sockets therefor are smaller in diameter than those of the other holder and socket.
12. A portable smokers-article as defined in claim 1 in which the tank is physically separable from the case. =l=

1. A portable smoker''s-article comprising a case havving a tank for holding a quantity of liquid, said tank having an access opening forming a socket, a mouthpiece removably mounted in said socket, said tank having a second access opening forming a socket, a cigarette holder removably mounted in said second socket, said second socket having a tube extending into said tank and terminating near the bottom of said tank, said casing having a storage compartment having space to removably receive and hold said cigarette holder and said mouthpiece when removed from their respective sockets, and stopper means removably insertable in said access openings to prevent said liquid from leaking from said tank when the article is not in use, said storage compartment having space to removably receive said stopper means when not in use.
2. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 1 in which said case has a lid hinged thereto and positioned to cover said stopper means and close said storage compartment when the article is not in use.
3. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 2 in which said case is rectangular and has long and narrow sides and said lid is hinged to one of said long sides to lie flat against said side of the case when the article is in use.
4. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 1 in which the outlets of said sockets are substantially flush with the top of said tank.
5. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 1 in which said mouthpiece has a plug portion shaped to fit its socket and a bit portion extending substantially at right angles from said plug portion.
6. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 1 in which said cigarette holder has a plug portion shaped to fit its socket.

8. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 5 in which the case is rectangular and the plug portion on said mouthpiece is rotatably supported by said socket so that it may extend from either the long or the narrow sides of the case.
9. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 6 in which the case is rectangular and the plug portion on said cigarette holder is rotatably supported by its socket so that it may extend from either the long or the narrow sides of the case.
10. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 7 in which the case is rectangular and the plug portion on said mouthpiece is rotatably supported by its socket so that it may extend from either the long or the narrow sides of the case and the plug portion on said cigarette holder is rotatably supported by its socket so that it may extend from either the long or the narrow sides of the case.
11. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 7 in which one of the holders and a corresponding one of the sockets therefor are smaller in diameter than those of the other holder and socket.
12. A portable smoker''s-article as defined in claim 1 in which the tank is physically sepArable from the case.
