PISTON-ROD PACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,225, dated October 2, 1888. Application filed April 2, 1888. Serial No. 269,342. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN Guns, 9. citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston- Rod Packings; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is a longitudinal central section of devices embodying said invention.
My present invention relates to the construction of glands or packings for piston-rods or like reciprocating shafts, and has for its object to obtain a simple and effective packing-one which shall be fluid-tight, will sufficiently lubricate the rod or shaft, and prevent the entrance of dust and dirt or the escape and loss of the lubricant.
The main feature of the invention consists in the combination, with a gland-chamber, of a removable open ended lubricant box, a bucket-packing arranged to project into the mouth of the lubricant-box, and a follower, substantially as will hereinafter more fully appear.
I will now proceed to describe my invention more specifically, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
A indicates a portion of a cylinder, having a piston-rod, B, and cylinder-head 0, provided with a gland-chamber, 1, which may be formed with or attached to the cylinder-head C, as preferred. Within the gland-chamber l is formed a shoulder, 2, for the-reception of a cupped or bucket packing, 3, arranged with its convexity toward the cylinder, so as to hug the piston-rod 13 during its movement. This packing will be effectually seated by any pressure leaking from the cylinder A, and will serve as an additional means of security against leakage, supplementing the packing 6.
4 indicates a detachable or removable lubricant box or chamber fitted to the glandcavity, so as to serve as a follower to hold the bucket-packing 3 and clamp it against the shoulder 2. The outer end or mouth of the, 1ubricant-chamber 4, where the lubricant is introduced, is preferably slightly cupped, as
at 5, and is provided with a cupped or bucket packing, 6, whose seat is on the outer end of the lubricant-chamber 4, and which extends into the mouth of said chamber, hugging the piston-rod B, so as to prevent the escape of any of the lubricant. In conjunction therewith a third cupped or bucket packing, 7, reversely arranged, may beemployed to hug the piston-rod, especially in its return movement, and thus prevent the ingress of dust or grit.
8 indicates a follower nut or plug adapted to secure the preceding parts, and especially the bucket-packiugs 6 and 7,the bucket-packing 3 being held in turn by the removable lubricant-chamber 4, as before specified.
In applying the devices the lubricant-0mm her is first packed with waste, to hold the lubricant, or with a solid lubricating material, as the case may be. The bucket-packing 3 is then inserted and the annular lubricantohamber slipped on the piston-rod and pressed down into the gland until it holds or clamps the bucket-packing 3. The bucket-packings 6 and 7 are then slipped on the piston-rod B, and, finally, the follower-nut or threaded follower is inserted and screwed down to bind on the packings 6 and 7 and hold the whole in place.
In case the above-described packing is em-' ployed with rotating shafting, the removable or detachable lubricantohamber should be secured against rotation by flat outer surfaces or steady-pins.
The lubricant can be readily renewed from time to time by removing the lubricant-chamber 4 and repaoking it with a solid lubricant or with oil-charged waste.
Having thus described the nature, advantages, and operation of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 18-
1. In a piston-rod packing, the combination, with a gland-chamber, of a removable lubricant box arranged therein, a bucketpacking arranged to project within the mouth of the lubricant box, and a plug or gland follower, substantially as aud for the purposes specified.
2. In a piston-rod packing, the-combination, with a gland-chamber, of a removable presence of two witnesses, this 15th day of lubricant-box arranged therein, two reversely- February, 1888. arranged bucket'packings, one of which projects within the mouth of the lubricant-box, 5 and a plug or gland nut follower, substantially I \Vitnesses:
