CHAUNOEY XV. MILLS, OF ROCHESTER, NEWT YORK..
PACKING FOR PlSTON-RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,900, dated August 14, 1888.
Application filed March 24, 1888.
To @ZZ whom zit may concern:
Be it known that l, CHAUNCEY YV. MILLS, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Packing for Piston-Rods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and [o the letters of reference marked thereon, which forni part ofthis specificatiomin which- Figure l, is a detail longitudinal sectional View through a cylinder head stufng box, showing my improved pistou-rod-packing devices applied. Fig. 2 is a face view of the expanding head. Fig. 3 is a side view of the sleeve and head.
The present invention is an improvement in piston-rod paekings, and its objects are t0 provide means whereby the packing will be automatically compressed around the pistonrod to form a steam-tight dam when steam is admitted into the cylinder on the side adjoining the stalling-box.
Further objects of the invention are to autoinaticall y compensate for wear of the packing and to improve the bearings ofthe piston-rod in the smiling-box, all ei' which I accomplish by the means hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly specified in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates an ordinary cylinder-head; B, the stuffing-box, C, the piston-red, and D the annular gland-plate surrounding rod C and suitably secured to the face of box B.
E is a sleeve surrounding rod C and extending into the cylinder, so as to forni the bearing `for rod C through the cylinder-head.
F is a head on the front end of sleeve E, about equal in diameter to the interior diameter ol box B. This head is conically recessed in its front face, the sides of the eene converging toward sleeve E and ending at an annular shoulder, e, at the front of the sleeve,as shown.
` The annular' wallof head F is radially slotted,
as shown at f f, or in other suitable manner, so that head F resembles somewhat a crownwheel, and the object ol' these slots is hereinafter stated. A
0n the sleeve E is placed a coiled spring,G, whiehbears against the face ci head A. and the Serial No. 268,407. (No model.)
steam is admitted into the cylinder on the side next box B, pressure is had on sleeve Eto force the same and head F forward, compress ing packing I longitudinally, and steam, leaking between sleeve E and rod C or between the sleeve and head A enters the slots f in head F and distends the intermediate portions or teeth of the head, causing it to bind tightly in box B, and at the same time the steam exerts an annular compression on packing I below the slots f, causing the same to make a complete steam-tight joint and preventing any leakage of the steam through the stuffing-box, even though the rod C were worn or channeled in its periphery. The head by its expansion will thus tighten the packing in box B, while the active steam-pressure is on the same end of the cylinder. lVhen this pressure is released during the return-stroke of the piston, the compressing of the packing l on the rod C is of course diminished, and consequently the wear on rod and packing is lessened nearly one-half. The packing l is irst compressed by means of the plate D, ring H, and spring G, and the spring will cause head F to automatically follow up the packing l to compensate for its wear, so that the packing requires but little attention, and, owing to the steam gettingoutside the packing throughslotsff the latter is kept soft and in working condition,'whereas in ordinary packings the exterior ofthe packing hardens and mustbe picked out and renewed. In the present case when the packing becomes worn down a new ring of packing may be inserted without removing the old, which can be entirely used.
lt will be seen that sleeve E forms a bearing for rod C, extending from the interior ef the cylinder partly through the smiling-box, and by it all contact of the rod with the cylinder head is prevented, so that there is no Wear -on the head, and when sleeve E becomes worn it can be readily replaced and thus preserve tightjoints between the piston-rod and cylinder-head.
e l msaoo tending into the cylinder, and packing I, all 2o constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination of head A, box B, rod
C, and the gland-bushing, substantially as described, with the sleeve E, projecting into the cylinder, the slotted expansive head F, conieally recessed in its front face and united to said sleeve, the spring G, and packing I, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of twov witnesses,
CHAUNCEY W. MILLS.
