STAND FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC CAMERAS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed April 535, 1888.

Be it known that I, JAMES EDWARD BLACK- MORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of- Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stands for Photographic Cameras, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in stands for photographic cameras; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a camera-stand embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line w x of Fig. 1.

A represents a circular casting or platform, which is provided with acentral rectangular opening, A, in the sides of which are V-shaped recesses A".

B represents a similar casting, which is of greater diameter than the casting A, is arranged at a'suitable distance below the same, and is provided with a central rectangular opening, B, in the sides of which are V shaped recesses B". Y

C represents a series of curved legs, which are secured to the castings or platforms A at suitable regular distances apart, and the lower ends of the said supporting-legs are provided with casters D.

E represents a vertical open frame, which is arranged between the castings A B, and is provided on one side, at its base, with an inclined arm, F. G represents a verticallymovable rod or standard, which is rectangular in transverse section, and thereby adapted to fit in and pass through the openings A and B, and is provided on opposite sides with beveled flanges or splines H, which enter the recesses A and B". On one side of the standard H are rack-teeth U I, and the upper end of said standard is enlarged and widened to form a segmental head, K, which is provided on its curved upper side with racleteeth L.

M represents a shaft, which is journaled in, the curved arm F, and has its lower end journaled in a recess in the base of the frame E. Secured to the said shaft near its lower end is a conical worm, N, which engages the rackteeth I, and to the outer end of said shaft is secured a crank, O. The said shaftis further supported by a bearing, P, which depends from the upper casting, A.

B represents a platform on which the camera is supported. To the under side of the said platform, nea the center of the same, is secured a rocking frame, S,,which is provided with depending arms T, that bear on opposite sides of the segmentand have their lower ends pivoted to the upper end of the standard G by means of a bolt, U.

From the foregoing description it will he understood that by turning the shaft M the worm will be caused to move the standard G in a vertical direction, so as to raise or lower the platform, and thereby adjust the camera to any desired height, and that by reason of I the arms T of frame S being pivoted to the standard the platform B may be turned to any desired inclination.

On the under side of the said platform, near its center and near one of its ends, are depending bearings V, in which isjournaled a crankshaft, X. To the inner end ofsaid crank-shaft is secured a worm, Y, which meshes with the rack-teeth L, and thereby the platform B may be turned to any desired inclination, as before stated, by rotating the shaft X.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the supporting frame or base, the standard guided vertically therein, and having the segmental head K at its upper end provided with the rack-teeth L, the shaft M, having the worm engaging the rack-teeth on the standard G, whereby the latter may be raised and lowered, and the platform B, having the depending arms T, pivoted to the standard, and the shaft X, journaled in bearings on the platform and having the worm engaging the rack-teeth L, substantially as de scribed.

2. The combination of the castings or platforms A B, having the central openings provided with the recesses in opposite sides, the standard G, guided in the said openings and having tongues or splines engaging said renation with the standard vertically adjustable therein, the rack-teeth L on the standard, the I 5 platform It, pivoted to the standard, and the shaft X, fitted to the platform and having the worm engaging the rack-teeth L, as set forth.
