D. 8., H. & E. SANBORN.
GRAPPLE.
No. 389,856. Patented Sept. 18, 1888.
TATES llrvrrnn DARIUS S. SANBORN, OF NORWAY, AND HORACE SANBORN AND ELLET SAN- BORN, OF PARIS, ASSIGNORS TO THE UNION GRAPPLE COMPANY, OF NOR- VAY, MAINE.
GRAPPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. access, dated September is, 1888.
Application filed April 19, 1888. Serial No. 271,219.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DARIUS S. SANBORN, of Norway, in the county of Oxford, State of Maine, and Hermon SA-NBORN and'ELLET SAN- 5 BORN, both of Paris, in the county of Oxford, State of Maine, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grapples, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved grapple represented as in position for use, the ends of the pole being shown as broken off; Fig. 2, an enlarged side elevation of the clamp detached, the tongs being shown as broken off; Fig. 3, a vertical section taken on line as in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the clamp shown as open; and Fig. 5, a sectional view of the clamp, taken on line y y in Fig. 2.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
Our invention relates to that class of grapples which are employed in lifting and transporting logs; and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter full y set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a more effective and otherwise desirable device of this character than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all con versant with such matters from the following explanation:
In the drawings, A represents the pole of the grapple, B the clamp, and C C the tongs.
The clamp B consists of two semicircular metallic plates, mf, which are hinged together at one end, as shown at 2. These plates are each provided with an inwardly projecting prong or sharp stud, 1;, adapted to engage the pole A and prevent the clamp from slipping or turning thereon when in use. The free end of the platef is provided centrally with a re cess, i, (see Fig. 5,) and the corresponding end of the plate at with a stud, t, adapted to em ter said recess when the clamp is closed, the purpose of said studand recess being to refNo'model.)
lieve the lateral strain on the hinge z of the clamp when in use. provided near their free ends with a downweirdly-projecting flange, d, and pivoted in said flanges by means of bolts 9 and nuts Zare tongs C, having outwardly-curved legs provided with inwardly-projecting hooks is at their free ends, as shown in Fig. 1, said tongs being of the class ordinarily known as icetongs. The inner end of each leg of the tongs is slightly beveled, as shown at h in Fig. 2, said beveled ends engaging the body of the clamp and serving as stops to prevent the inwardly-projecting hooks k from coming into contact with each other.
In the use of ourimprovement the nuts Zare removed from the bolts 9 and the clamp B thrown open, as shown in Fig. 4, to receive the pole A, around which it is closed centrally, as shown in Fig. 1, and the nuts Z replaced on said bolts, thereby securely holding the clamp in position. The legs of the tongs C are then The plates or f are each spread apart, as shown by the dotted lines in I Fig. 1, and passed down over the sides of the log or timber to be moved, when the workingmen in charge, by lifting simultaneously at each end of the pole A, will cause the tongs to grasp the log and the log to be raised in a manner that will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters without a more explicit description.
It will readily be seen that by securing the clamp near one end of the pole A the apparatus may be employed for the purposes of the ordinary cant dog, if desired.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- In a grapple, the hinged clamp B, provided with the prongs o, recess 5, stud t, and flanges d, in combination with the pole A and tongs C, having curved legs pivoted in said flanges and provided with the beveled portion h and hooks in, substantially as set forth.
DARIUS S. SANBORN. HORACE SANBORN. ELLET SANBORN.
