Beit known that I, WITCHA S. SETTLE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to cabinets for use in stores; and the obj ect is to provide for the convenientarrangement of the stock according to size, style, or make, and so as to enable the salesman or attendant to have ready access to different styles and sizes and to select those desired without the trouble of moving or handling other stock.

It consists, essentially, of a case or cabinet furnished with drawers which are arranged in groups or sections and with a door for each group or section. It consists, further, in dividin g each drawer into several compartments by movable or knockdown partitions, and in providing the doors on their outer sides with clasps, hooks, or other devices for holding samples of the goods contained in the drawers.

Preferably I arrange the drawers in groups or sections of three and divide each drawer by three partitions into four compartments, thus making twelve compartments in eachgroup of drawers. Each compartment is designed to hold one pair of shoes, and provision is therefore made for twelve pairs in each section, and these are to be selected or assorted and arranged with respect to size. This arrangement will be found convenient in ordinary cases; but of course different arrangements may be adopted, if preferred, without departing from the spirit of my invention. Each section is provided with a door, by which the drawers in that section are covered, and each door is provided on its outer face with a clasp, hook, or other device to hold a sample shoe or card to designate the style or quality, or both, of the shoes contained in that section.

In the accompanying drawings,which Villustrate my invention and form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a case or cabinet constructed and arranged according to my invention. Fig. 2 is -a longitudinal vertical section through one of the drawers, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of partitions made of wood and sheet metal, respectively.-

The case or cabinet is constructed in any convenient size or shape, with vertical partitions a, suitably disposed to divide the same into sections corresponding with the width of the drawers A, and with horizontal partitions or shelves a a sufcient distance apart to receive between them the number of superimposed drawers which constitute a group or section. Each drawer slides upon ways or runners, which are attached to the vertical partitions in the usual way, so that either drawer may be pulled out without disturbing the others of the group. Each drawer has three (more or less) movable or knockdown partitions b, which divide it into compartments, the drawers being of such size and the number of partitions being such as to make each compartment the proper size to contain one pair of shoes.

The partitions b are made of wood or sheet metal or of other suitable material, and are provided at their ends with projecting pins b', which work in vertical grooves or slots a3 in the sides of the drawers, and at their bottoms with projecting pins b2, which enter holes in the bottom. The partitions when set up are held in position by the pins b bz. They may be turned and laid down in the bottoms of the drawers by trst raising them up to disengage the pins b2 from the bottom, the slots a3 being long enough for this purpose, and when so laid down they will be held in place by the pins b. Thus two or more compartments may be thrown into one and the drawer adapted to larger or other stock.

Each section of the cabinet is provided with a hinged door, C, by which it may be closed. These doors not only inclose the drawers, but they serve as supports upon which to hang sa mple shoes or cards to indicate the style or quality of the goods contained in that section. For this latter purpose each door is provided with a clasp or hook, c, to hold the shoes. It is thus unnecessary to take downany sample from its hook or clasp when the door is opened to give access to the drawers of any section, as the door and sample together swing out of IOO the way to allow the drawers to be opened and again swing back into place when the sec-r tion is closed.

XVhile the principal oilice of the doors is to provide supports for the samples, they also cover the fronts of the drawers, and the 1atter need not, therefore, be so highly nished as they would have to be if the doors were omitted.

I may substitute for the doors swinging` brackets to swing in front of the sections of drawers and support the samples, and adapted to swing back out of the way the saine as the doors. In such case the drawers will require to be finished in order to impart a finished appearance to the cabinet.

The fronts of the drawers will be provided with labels to designate the sizes they contain, the style and quality being indicated by the sample on the door or bracket. Each compartment may also be labeled to designate the particular size contained therein, whereby the salesman or attendant will be enabled to selectthe size desired withonthandling or touching any others.

Having referred to other materials than those specified out of which the partitions b may be made, I desire to state here that they may bc conveniently and cheaplj,r made out of wire bent into shape to form frames and eovered with cloth or other suitable fabric.

Having now described my invention, I claiml. A shoecabiuet provided with drawers arranged in groups or sections, each section adapted to contain a proper assortment of sizes, and each provided with a swinging door or bracket adapted to be swung in front thereof, said doors or brackets having clasps or holders to hold sample shoes, substantially as shown and described.

2. A shoe-cabinet provided with drawers arranged in groups or sections, each section adapted to contain an assortment of sizes, and each drawer divided by movable or knockdown partitions into several compartments, each compartment adapted to contain a single pair of shoes, and each section provided with a swinging door or bracket adapted to be turned in front of the drawers of that section and provided with a clasp, hook, or holder to support a sample of the shoes in the drawers, substantially as shown and described.

3. A drawer for shoe-cabinets constructed, shown and described, with movable partitions adapted to be turned down, so as to lie on the bottom of the drawer, orto be setup to divide the drawer into compartments, substantially as shown and described.
