Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
S. P. LOOMIS AND T. HAWK, OF MAUCH CHUNK, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENTS IN SASH STOPS OR. FASTENINGS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 38,968, dated June 23, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, S. P. LOOMIS and T. HAWK, of Mauch Chunk, in the county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Window-Sash Stop or Fastening; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of our invention, the case of the slide-bolt being bisected, as indicated by the line m x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a section ofthe same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l
Similar lettersy of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in having a roller fitted in a beveled or inclined recess in one side of the window-frame and using in connection therewith a lever and slide-bolt, all arranged in such a manner that the sash may be retained at any desired height, and also securely locked when in a closed state.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A represents a portion of one side of a window-frame; an-l B is a recess, made in said side of the frame and having an inclined back, a, the upper part of the recess being the widest7 and gradually diminishing in width from its upper to its lower end until the back a reaches the outer surface of the side of the frame, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. This recess has a metal case, C, fitted within, it ofthe precise shape ofthe recess, and within said case there is placed a roller, D, which is retained in position by means of a rod, E, which is fitted longitudinally in the case and in a groove, b, made circumferentially in the roller. This rod E, it will be seen, admits ofthe roller rising and falling in the case C. Adjoining the case C there is a metal plate, c, to which a lever, F, is attached by a pivot, d. This lever projects `across the case C, as shown cle'arly in Fig. 1, and the under edge of the lever has a rounded or semi-circular projecton, e, (shown clearly by the dotted line in Fig. l.)
G is a slide-bolt, which is fitted in a socket, H, directly underneath the lever F. This bolt has a recess, f, made in its upper edge, as shown clearly in Fig. l. v The front end of the bolt G is rounded or beveled at its inner end, as shown in Fig. 1.v The window-sash is shown in red outline in both figures, Vand it will be seen that therollerD will bend against the edge of the sash and hold it up, as the descent of the sash or its downward pressure will have a tendency to roll the roller D downward and cause the same to press against the side of the sash. The sash therefore may be freely raised to any point and retained at the point by the roller. When the sash is fully down, the bolt G is shoved inward so that its inner end will fit in a notch in the sash. This bolt serves two purposes: First, it locks the sash, when thelatter is down or closed, and it serves to raise the roller D in the case G to admit of the sash being lowered. This is effected by shoving the bolt a little inward, so that its front end will act against the projection e, and throw up the lever F, the latter raising theroller. (See red outline, Fig. 1.) By this means the sash will be freed from the roller so that it may descend. When the bolt G is shoved inward so as to lock the sash, the projection c of the lever will drop into the recess f in the bolt, as shown in black outline in Fig. l. When the sash is raised, the bolt G is drawn outward from the sash, so as to be free from it and to allow the projection e to fall in front of its inner end, and the bolt is allowed to be in this position at all times except when the'sash is to be locked in a closed state.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The roller D, placed in the case C, which is provided with an inclined back, a, and fitted in one side of the window-frame, in combination with the lever F and the slide-bolt G all arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
S. P. LOOMIS, T. HAWK.
