Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN F. HORN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,964, dated June 23, 1863.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JONATHAN F. HORN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Washing Machine .and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specilication, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which-,-
Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a traverse section, of it, the latter section being taken through one of the frames D, to be hereinafter described.
In the said drawings, A denotes the water or washingliquor reservoir, across the middle part of which there is arranged a vibratory dasher, B which, at its upper part, is hung on centers a a. This dasher is made of two ranges of horizontal bars, b b b, and two end pieces, c c, they being arranged with respect to one another as shown in the figures. Between the two ranges of bars b b there are two other strong tie-bars, which extend from one piece c to the other, and serve to receive and support a lever, C, by which the dasher is to be put in vibration. This lever is loaded or furnished with a heavy ball or weight, d, at its upper end. The momentum of this ball causes the dasher to force the clothes with great power and effect against either of the movable grids, racks, or wash-frames D D, during the process of washing with the machine. Along handle, E, may be jointed to the lever C, and serve a good purposein facilitating the operating of it. A person in order to move the lever does the same by means of the said handle. Underneath the dasher and within the reservoir A there is a grated bottom rack, F, curved to the sweep of the bottom of the dasher. There is a movable side rack or open-work frame, D, at each extremity ofthe curved grid F, it being hinged to the grid or to the reservoir insuch manner as to be capable of being moved from an upright position against the end ofthe reservoir into an inclined one, or in a direction toward the dasher, it being held in either position by means of two pins, d d, passed through the upper parts of its side bars, and into ledges e e, affixed against the inner surfaces of the sides of the reservoir or arranged therein as shown in the drawings. By applying each of the washing-frames D to the reservoir, as stated, such frame can be used when either is in an upright or in an inclined position. When in the latter position, the frame D not only performs its function in aiding in Washing the clothes, but it serves to keep the dasher from ejecting them from the machine; but when the frame D is in an upright position the clothes can readily be either put into the machine or removed from it. So, when the frame is inclined the dasher may be brought up to it, so as to have its next adjacentrange of bars b b in parallelism with the frame. Therefore, under this, position of the frame, the dasher will be better able to squeeze the clothes and force the water through them than when the frame is upright.
In washing with the machine, the clothes are to be in the space between each of the frames D and the dasher, in order that the dasher, at every stroke of it, may operate with one ofthe frames and with the curved grid beneath it.. This operationof the machine is very advantageous in washing.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
l. Theimproved machine, made substantially as described-thatis to say, with a vibratory dasher, a bottom rack, and two movable side racks, constructed, arranged, and applied together in manner and so as to operate substantially as described.
2. In combination therewith, the loaded momentum lever or lever and weight, arranged and applied to the dasher so as to operate the same as described.
