Description

A amigo UNITED STATES PATENTv OFFICE.
JOSEPH ADAMS, OF JANESVILLE, WISCONSIN.
WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom fit may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH ADAMS, of Janes ville, in the countyr of Bock and State of Wisconsin, have invented a newA and Improved Clothes-Washing Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the linea'w of Fig. 2;V Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same,`with the front side of the suds-box partly broken away.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the employment or use of a lever-frame provided with a swinging frame having a roller and slats attached to it, in connection with a yielding concave slatted bottom and a yielding slatted bearingframe, all arranged with a suds-boX, to operate in the manner substantially as hereinafter set forth.
A represents the suds-box, which is constructed of quadrilateral form, provided with an inclined bottom, a, and supported ata suitable height by legs b or any proper framing.
B represents what I terni a lever-frame, which is of rectangular form, and has its side pieces, c c, connected by pins d d to the upper ends of the legs a ct at the rea-r end of the suds-box. This lever-frame B has a frame, C, suspended from it by pins or journals c c, and has two springs, D, bearing against it, said springs being connected to cross-bars f inthe two frames B O. (See Fig. 1.) In the lower part of the frame G there are secured three parallel slats7 g g g, and also a tluted roller, E, the` latter being infront of the slats, which, with the roller, extend transversely across the suds-box.
F represents a frame, which is fitted on the bottom a of the suds-box, and is provided with a series of transverse slats, h, which form a slight concave, the end of the frame F at the l'ront part of the suds-box resting on springs G, and the opposite end bearing against a xture on the bottom of the suds-boX. This frame F has an inclined position, the end which rests on the springs being the most elevated, corresponding to the elevated end of the bottom of the suds-box.
H represen ts a bearingframe, against which the clothes are pressed during the washing or cleansing operation. This frame is composed of horizontal slats i, and its lower'end works on pivots at the rear end of the bottom a of the suds-box, and its upper end, at each side, is provided with a lip or projection, and these lips or projections Work in curved slots j at the sides ofthe suds-box. The frameH has a spring, I, bearing against its rear side.
The clothes to be washed are placed on the concave-slotted frame F and subjected to a rubbing and pressing operation by actuating the lever-frame B. The slatted bearing-frame H yields or gives as the clothes are pressed against it under the forward movement of the frame C, and causes the clothes to turn, so that all parts of them will be thoroughly acted upon. The pressure ot' the roller E on the clothes is due to the springs D, while the springs G, on which the elevated end of the slatted concave frame F rests, prevent the clothes being subjected to any undue pressure.
This machine may be used for fulling. purposes, as either the pressing or rubbing operations may be gone through with separately, the frame F or Hbeing removed, as the case requires.
The lever-frame F may be pivoted at different points 1, 2, or 3, (see Fig. 1,) according to the quantity ot' clothes in the suds-box to be operated upon.
. I claim as new and desire to secure by Lety 2. The yielding concave slatted frame F, in
connection with the frames B C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The yielding slatted bearing-frame H, in
mconnection with the frames B C, for thepurpose specified.
4. The combination of the lever-frame B, pendent frame C, slatted concave frame F, and bearing-frame H, all arranged, in connection with the `suds-boX A, to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
\ JOSEPH ADAMS. Witnesses:
H. A. PATTERSON, JOSEPH BAKER.
