UNITED STATES PATENTS 12/1969 Bryant et a1. 240/41 R 4 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures PATENTED JUL 2 2 I975 FIG-4 1 AUTOMOTIVE SPOT LAMPS This invention relates to electrical lamps and has for its object to provide an electrical lamp which is simple to assemble and economical to manufacture.
According to the present invention, there is provided an electrical lamp comprising a recessed body having an integral bulb holder, a reflector mounted in the body and carrying a bulb shield, and a lens cover overlying the recess in the body.
Preferably, the reflector is provided with a rim having a plurality of recesses therein, and a plurality of posts extending from shoulders integral with the body pass through the recesses and are spread over to hold the rim against the shoulders.
Preferably also, the reflector is further supported relative to the body by further shoulders which are disposed around the bulb holder and which are integral with the body.
The bulb shield may comprise a sheet metal cover provided with a pair of sheet metal legs having tags thereon which are respectively engaged in slots on opposite sides of the reflector and turned over to secure the bulb shield relative to the reflector.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a sectional view of an electrical lamp according to the present invention,
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of a reflector of the lamp of FIG. 1,
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a die cast recessed body of the electrical lamp of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the body of FIG. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the electrical lamp comprises a zinc based die cast, recessed body provided with an integral bulbholder 11 supporting a quartz iodine bulb 12. The electrical lamp further includes a reflector 13 mounted in the body 10 and carrying a bulb shield 14. A lens cover 15 overlies the recess in the body 10.
Referring now more particularly to FIGS. 2 to 4, the body 10 is formed with a plurality of shoulders 16 adjacent a recessed rim 17 thereof and integral with the body 10. A post 18 extends integrally from each shoulder 16. A rim 19 around the reflector 13 is provided with a series of recesses 20 therein. In use, the rim 19 rests on the shoulders 16 so that the posts 18 pass through the recesses 20. In order to secure the reflector 13 relative to the body 10, the ends of the posts 18 extending through the recesses 20 are spread over so as to hold the rim 19 against the shoulders 16. The reflector 13 is further located in position in the body 10 by means of a plurality of further shoulders 21 which are spaced around the bulbholder 11 and are integral with the body 10.
The bulb shield 14 comprises a generally cup-shaped sheet metal cover having a pair of sheet metal legs 23 riveted to the arms thereof. Each leg 23 is provided with a tag 24 thereon which engages in a slot 25 in the adjacent side of the reflector 13. Further tags 26 on each leg 23 abut against the adjacent side edge of the reflector 13 so that the bulb shield 14 is firmly located in position on the reflector 13.
The Lens cover 15 is formed of a transparent or translucent plastics material and is provided with a rim 27 which is adhesively secured within the recessed rim 17 of the body 10.
The body 10 is connected with a mounting bracket 28 via a pivot 29 whereby it can be pivotally mounted at a suitable location on a motor vehicle.
The above described form of lamp is of relatively simple construction and is easy and economic to manufacture whilst being of reliable and robust construction.
I claim:
1. An electrical lamp comprising a body functioning as a housing for said lamp, said body having a recess therein; a bulbholder integral with said body; a reflector mounted in said body; a buld shield carried by said reflector; and a lens cover overlying said recess in said body.
2. The electrical lamp according to claim 1, wherein said reflector is provided with a rim having a plurality of recesses therein, and a plurality of posts extending from shoulders integral with said body pass through said recesses and are spread over to hold said rim against said shoulders.
3. The electrical lamp according to claim 2, wherein said reflector is further supported relative to said body by further shoulders which are disposed around said bulb holder and which are integral with said body.
4. The electrical lamp according to claim 1, wherein said bulb shield comprises a sheet metal cover provided with a pair of sheet metal legs having tags thereon which are respectively engaged in slots on opposite sides of said reflector and deformed to secure said bulb shield relative to said reflector.
