MUSTARD-=PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,365, dated September 11, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. CRARY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mustard-Package, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide prepared mustard as an article of trade put up in sealed packages, which when opened may be placed directly upon the table; and to this end my invention consists of a package, preferably of glass, having a lid fitted upon the same, combined with a sheet of lead and a sheet of paper or other material placed between the lead and the contents of the package, and the package sealed at the edge of the lid by a strip of paper or other suitable material secured by adhesive material both to the lid and the body of the package.
Reference is to be had to theaccompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package constructed, closed, and sealed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
The package A is by preference of glass. Upon it is placed a lid or cover, B, formed with an offset, a, to [it inside of the upper edge of the package. Itis also formed with a notch, b, to receive a mustard-spoon. Upon the contents O of the package A is placed a layer, D, of paper. Upon this is placed a layer, E, of sheet-lead. The said sheets D E are folded down over the edge of the package A, as shown at d. The cover or lid 13 isthen placed upon the sheet-lead and sheet of paper and pressed down, so that the offset a presses the sheet-lead E, and sheet D, 'of paper, into the body of the package, forming the folds (1'. Over and around the edge of the lidBand the package A is then placed the strip F,of paper or other fabric, which laps over the lower edges of the sheets D E, as shown at c, and laps upon the top of the cover or lid B, as shown at c, and said strip is secured to the body of the package, and also to the edge and top of the lid B, by paste, glue, or other adhesive material. In this manner the package is sealed airtight, and the strip F serves also to hold the lid B in place upon the package, and by re moving said strip thelid may be lifted off and the sheets D E, of lead and paper, removed, when the package and contents are ready for the table.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The package A, having a lid, 13, to fit upon the same, in combination with the sheet E, of sheetdead, the sheet D, placed between the lead and the contents of the package, and the edge strip, F, placed around the lid and body of the package and secured to both by adhesive material, substantially as described.
