Description

(No Model.) H OLIVER ENVELOPE.
No. 389,318. Patented Sept. 11, 1888.
a SI WITNESSES: p/ INVENTOR (4 M BY yaw/WW ATTORNEYS.
PNITED STATES PATENT HENRY OLIVER, OF BROOKLYN, ASSIGNOR TO ARABELLA C. CUNNINGHAM, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ENVELOPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,318, dated September 11, 1888.
Application filed June 28, 1887. Renewed June 3, 1888. Serial No. 275,840,}.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY OLIVER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have i nvented a new and Improved Envelope, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in envelopes, and has for its object to provide an improved envelope specially adapted for transmitting merchandise, samples, and printed matter through the mails, or for filing away documents and other papers.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will I5 be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate 2o corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the envelope open. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the envelope as closed, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal and longitudinal section taken on line or a; of
Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention an envelope, A, of any desired shape or size, is employed and manufactured from anysuitablc material.
The flap A of the envelope, which is usually pasted down upon the body, is provided with an eyelet-hole, B, located about the center of the said flap and preferably in substantial alignment with its angular end ct, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the rear of the envelope, at the union of the side flaps, G, a staple, C, is fastened at a point substantially horizontally centering the eyelet B when the top flap, A, is folded down upon the body, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. 0 Prior to the staple 0 being inserted, as afore- (No model.)
said, the body at the point of insertion is reenforced by a strip, D, attached either upon the outer or inner side, but preferably the former, which strip may be of a tough or stout paper or of a suitable fabric-such as linen; 5 also, prior to the introduction of the staple through the strip D and united side flaps, O, a band, D, of rubber or other suitable elastic material, is entered upon the staple, adapted, as shown in Fig. 1, to be suspended therefrom outside the envelope.
In operation the articles to be mailed, expressed, or preserved are inserted in the envelope in the usual manner, the flap A being also carried down, as heretofore, upon the 5 body. The elastic band D is then passed from the under side out through the eyelet B and made to encompass the envelope centrally the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
I do not limit myself to the attachment of 6c) the band D by means of a staple.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An envelope provided with an eyelet in the upper or folding flap and having an elastic band secured to the body in position to be passed through said eyelet and around the body when said flap is folded down, substantially as set forth.
2. An envelope provided with an eyelet in the upper or folding flap, a staple inserted at the union of the side flaps of the body, and an elastic band carried by said staple, adapted to be passed through said eyelet and encircle the
