LOUIS FRANKLIN STEVENS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HOSE-THIMBLE. FOR THE WALLS OF BUILDINGS,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,025, dated September 4, 1888.
(No model.)
To (oZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis FRANKLIN STEV- nnsofthe city, county, and StateofNew York, have invented a new and. Improved Hose-Thim ble for the Walls of Buildings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a practical tube or thimble to be built into the walls of buildings and through which a hose-nozzle may be thrust for extinguishing fire; and to this end my invention consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indie-ate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation illustrating a masonry wall having my invention built therein. and showing a hosenozzle passed through the thirnble. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the wall and thinible, showing thethinr ble closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of one of the lockingbolts.
A represents a tube or thimble, preferably of brass, cement, or cast-iron, and adapted to be built into a brick or other wall, B. Each end of the thimble A is provided with a hinged door, 0, adapted to close the tube or thimble, and each door is provided with a spring-actuated locking-bolt, D, which is adapted to on gage with a recess, 2', in the thimble for holding the door closed. Each locking-bolt is held to slide in suitable keepers, a, and is formed with a projection, a, with which a key, I), passed through the key-hole b, may engage for disengaging the bolt from the recess 2' for opening the door, and each locking-bolt D is formed with a frame, D. (Shown clearly in Fig. 4.) In the center of each door 0 is secured a pin, (1, on which is placed loosely a plate, E, which is adapted to slide upon said pin. Theinnersurface of each plateEis formed with a cone, E, which passes through the frame D of the locking-bolt D, so that when the plate is thrust forward on the pin (1 the cone will act to withdraw the locking-bolt,and thus unlock the door.
The thiinble is, by preference, depressed in the center, each end being slightly daring to facilitate the insertion of the nozzle N, and also to adapt it to be secured more firmly in the wall. When both of the doors C are closed, all passage of air through the thiinble is prevented, and in case of fire in the building the outside door may be opened by a key and the nozzle thrust into the thilnble, whereupon the end of the nozzle will strike the plate E and force it forward on the pin d, causing the cone E to withdraw the locking-bolt, and thus antomatically open the inner door. By this means the necessity of breaking holes in walls to extinguish iire in the building may be wholly obviated.
Having thus described my in veuiion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The thiinble A, having hinged doors 0,
provided with locking bolts formed with frames D, in combination with the studs d, and plates E, placed loosely thereon and formed with cones E, substantially as described. 2. The casing A, adapted to be built in a wall and provided at the ends with a hinged door, 0, in combination with a lockingboltin the same plane with the door, and amovabie plate, E, adapted to be pressed by the hosenozzle for withdrawing the sliding lockingbolt, substantially as described.
LOUIS FRANKLIN STEVENS.
