lMPROVEMENT m HOSE PORT-HOLES FOR PARTITION-WALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,687, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY WOODMAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hose-Nozzle Port-Hole for Partition-\Valls, of which the following is a specification:

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device to enable the firemen to introduce their hose-nozzle into a closed room and flood it to extinguish a fire without its being necessary to break into the room, saving much time, and preventing the fire from making so much headway. The invention consists in the box flaring in both directions, the perforated partition, the hinged doors, the locks, the inner hinged doors, and their springs with each other, to adapt the device for use, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a box, made in the shape of two hop- .pers, placed with their small ends toward each other, and with a partition, B, across their middle or narrowest part. The mouths of the box A are closed with doors 0, hinged at their lower edges to the said box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The doors() are provided with spring catch-locks D, which can be opened upon the outer side only with a key, but may be unlocked from the inside by. drawing back the bolt of the lock with a stick or other convenient means. For convenience in doing this a projection, 12, is formed upon the inner end of the bolt of the look. In the partition B are formed two or more holes, each of which is provided with a door, E, which doors are placed upon the opposite sides of said partition B, and are hinged at their outer edges to the sides of the box A. The doors E are provided with springs F to hold them closed.
The device is designed to be made of such a size that when built into the wall its doors 0, when closed, may be flush with the opposite surfaces of said wall. When it becomes necessary to use the device the door 0 is opened, one of the spring-doors, E, is then opened, a stick or other article is inserted through the hole in the partition B, and the other door is opened by drawing back the bolt of its lock D by means of the'projection (1 upon the inner end of said bolt. The nozzle of the. hose may then be inserted through one of the holes in the partition B. One of the holes in the partition B may be used to look through while the hose-nozzle is inserted through the other, the flaring mouths of the box A enabling all parts of the room to be seen, and the stream of water to be ,directed to any desired point. When the room has been flooded or the fire extinguished the hose-nozzle may be withdrawn, and the door 0 closed, the door E closing itself as soon as the hose-nozzle is withdrawn.
The box A may be made with straight instead of flaring sides, if desired; but I prefer the flaring construction, as giving a more extended view of the interior of the room.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the box A, the perforated partition B, the hinged doors 0 provided with locks D d,hinged doors E, and springs F with each other, to adapt the device for use, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
