Description
U. L. SHAW.
No. 389,017. Patented Sept. 4, 1888.
URBIAN L. SHAW, or
WVESTFIELD, INDIANA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,017, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed April '17, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, URBIAN L. SHAW, of Viestfield, in the county of Hamilton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved late, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to agate, and has for its object to provide a. gate of simple and darable construction, which will not be easily clogged by snow or ice and cannotbe readily raised by animals.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate closed, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same open.
A A represent two side posts, to one of which the gate is attached. The gate consists of a series of vertical strips or slats, B, and a series of diagonal bars, I), pivotally connected together. The strips 13 are each provided upon the lower end with a slot or groove, 7), which is preferably V shaped. The diagonal bars D, which may be either of metal or wood, extend from top to bottom of the said strips or slats, the longerbars embracing, preferably, four of the vertical strips, as shown in Fig. 1. One of the vertical end strips, B, is attached securely to the inner face of one gate-post in Serial No. 270,947. (No model.)
into the post or attached to the outer face, as desired, the purpose of the guides being to prevent the end strip, when the gate is closed, from passing to one side of the post, and also to hold the end strip in contact with the inner face of the post. The two posts A are con nected at the base by means of a strip, E, which strip is preferably triangular in cross S( ction, or made ofa contour adapted to the contour of the notches in the lower ends or" the vertical strips. The purpose of this strip E is to prevent lateral movement of the gate at the base when closed, the guides d above referred to performing the same function at the upper side of the gate.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A gate consisting of a series of vertical strips or slats and a series of diagonal and parallel bars pivoted to the strips or slats, the longer diagonal bars extending from the top to the bottom of the said strips or slats, substantially as described.
2. In agate. the combination, with the posts and a base-strip extending from post to post and triangular in crosssection, of a. gate composed of a series of vertical strips having V- shaped notches in their lower ends to receive the base-strip when the gate is closed, and a series of diagonal and parallel. bars pivoted to the vertical. strips, the longer diagonal bars extending from the top to the hot-torn of the strips, substantially as herein shown and dc scribed.
