UNTTED STATES PaTnNT @einen J OHN CARLSON, OF SMETHPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,948, dated September e, 1888.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that l, JOHN CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Smethport, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in car-couplers; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed ont in the claims.
Figurel ofthe drawings isaperspective view of the end of a ear having a coupler embody4 ing the invention attached. Fig. 2 is a cen tral vertical longitudinal section ofthe said coupler.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a draw-head attached to the draw-bar a, secured to the end of the car.
a ai are respectively the upper and lower coupling-pin holes of the draw-head, and B is the longitudinal recess therein to receive the link b.
C is a metal frame secured to the top ofthe di'a\v-head, and composed of the semicircular vertical end straps, c c, and the longitudinal connecting-bars c', the top one of which is provided With the openings cl vertically above the coupling-pin openings, and through which the said pin passes.
D D are vertical guidebars rising from the top of the respective end straps, c, to which their upper ends are secured.
E is a coupling-pin, having the circumferential shoulder c near its top and the circumferential shoulder c near its bottom, and E is a-liftingplate,having the pin-opening ci, upon which the shoulder c rests, and the directing end openings, e3, through which the guidebars D pass.
F is a transverse shalt, having bearings f secured to the upper surface of the drawhead, and provided with the central frontwardlystanding cianl,f, that rests under the liftingplate E.
j"2 is an outwardlystanding crank on said shaft outside of the draw-head, and fsfi are crank-handles on the ends of said shaft out side ofthe ends of the cars, to which the coupler is attached.
It is evident that the bralreman can raise the lifting-plate E', and therebr the couplingpin E, by means of either handle at either side of the train.
G is a curved lever pivoted about centrally to a staple or loop standing outward from a vertical bar, g, secured to the outer surface of the draw-har. The said lever has a suitable handle, g', on its upper arm, and has the end of its lower arm connected by the link-rod g to the crank f. The handle g extends upward sufciently far to permit the hrakeinan, When on top ofthe train, to use it, and thereby lift the plate E' and the coupling pin E to unconple the cars.
H is a short threaded rod passing through the block h, which has an outer face of metal. The said rod has a head, J, provided With a shoulder, j', that engages over the link when the latter is engaged by the pin and holds it horizontal.
j is a plate secured against the inner surface of the block h, with its upper part bent for- Ward over the top of the block, and having its outstanding edge made concave to catch on the -f shoulder e and hold the pin up when the latter is raised. The bolt H is held to the block k by a nut which engages its end, as shown.
I is aspring, which has one end secured to and bearing against the inner side of the block ii and the other end secured to and hearing against the floor if of the draivhead recess h.
lWhen the pin has been raised by the liftingplate and the plate allowed to fail, the pin is held up by the concave edge of the platej catching on the shoulder e. Then, when the ears couple, the entering link drives bael; the block H, the said plate is disengaged from the shoulder on the pin, and the latter falls in the link.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a car coupler, the combination of the draw-head, the coupling-pin having a circumferential shoulder near its top,the lifting-plate, and the transverse crankshaft having hearings on the draw-head, substantially as specified.
2. In a ear-coupler, the combination of the draw-head, the coupling-pin having a circumferential shoulder near its top,the lifting-plate, the frame C, having the opening c for the pin,
IOO
and the guide-bars D for the lifting-plate, and
the transverse crank-shaft having bearings on the draw-head and acting on the lifting-plate, substantially as specified.
3. In a car-coupler, the combination, with the draw-head, the coupling-pin having a circumferential shoulder near its top, and the lifting-plate, of the shaft F, journaled in bearings on the draw-head and providedvwith the eranksff2 and crank-handles f, the curved lever G, pivoted to the vertical bar g, and the link-rod g', connecting the lower end of said lever with the crank f2 of the shaft F, substantially as specified.
4. In a car-coupler, the combination, Withl y the draw-head, the pin having the circumferential shoulders e e', the lifting-plate, and the crank-sliaftvjonrnaled on the drawlheafhof the -threaded rod H, the spring I, the block h, and
