UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL B. JEROME, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,564, dated August 28, 1888.
Application filed October 4, 1887. Serial No. 251,421.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. JEROME, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Inkstands, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of the class of inkstands in which the lids for covering the several inkwells in the common base are hinged in a line to the base and carry guides eccentric to their hinge-pivots, through which and intervening guides fixed to the base a slack cable fastened at its ends to the base runsloosely, so that the opening of onelid will close all the others, and the writer thus be prevented from accidentally dipping his pen in any other than the well in use.
The object of my improvement is to simplify and cheapen the construction of this class of inkstands without impairing their efficiency, and at the same time to give them a more ornamental and attractive appearance.
To this end the invention consists of a novel construction and arrangement of parts, sub stantially as hereinafter fully described and distinctly claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters ofreference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of an inkstand constructed according to my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, partly in section.
The base of the inkstand is constructed of a block, A, having a series of depressions, B, to receive removable ink-wells O, and each well is provided with a lid, D, hinged to the top of the basejust back of the well, the several hinge-joints being in a common line.
To the backs of the several lids D, a short distance from their hinge-joints and between the same and the outer free edges of the lids,
(No model.)
the hinge-joint ofthe same, and severalin this instance two-other similar posts, E E,are arranged to project from the top of the base be tween the respective pairs of lids D in line with the posts H. The upper ends of all the postsH and Eare formed with spherical heads, through which are formed transversely holes F, and the slack cableG is fastened atits ends in the holes F of the respective outside posts, H, and run loosely through the holes F in the heads of the intermediate posts, E, so that raising one lid closes all the others automatically.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described inkstand, as an improved article of manufacture, consisting of a baseprovided with an aligned series of inkwells, lids therefor hinged to the top ofthe base, an eye attached to the back of each lid between the hinge-joint and the free front edge of the lid, a series of like posts fixed to and projecting upward from the top of the base between successive lids and just outside the two end lids, said posts having heads on their upper ends formed with transverse holes in a common line a short distance in front of the line of hinge-joints, and a slack cable fastened iinmovably at either end in the holes of the two outside posts and running loosely through the holes in the intermediate posts and through the said eyes on the lids, substantially as specilied.
SAMUEL B. JEROME.
