BUSH FOR BUNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,830, datcd June 9, 186?.v
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
AIBe it known that we, WILLIAM'KENYON and ALEXANDER MENZIES, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use an Improved Bush for Bungs; and we dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, wherein- Figure lis anlelevation of the said bush, and Fig. 2 is a sectionof the same.

Bung-holes in barrels and casks have heretofore been made by cutting a tapering hole through oneof the staves, into which the bung is driven and then cut off smooth with the surface ofthe stave. As the wood composing the stave is not of uniform hardness, the bung will compress the surface Within the hole more in some places than in others, and when the bung is`driven in a second time or a new bung introduced itis very diihcult to make it perfectly tight, and often the hole has to be bored larger to true it, and in many other instances a new stave has to be introduced because the bung-hole is so much damaged that the bung cannot be made tight. In some instances screwbnn gs have been made in connection with metal linings to barrels and casks.
The nature of our said invention consist-s in a metallic bush inserted in the stave and secured by rivets, which bush receives the-ordinary bung. By this device injury to the stave is prevented, the bung will lit tightly regardless of the number of times it may be before the barrel is put together or previous to putting in one of the heads, and an anvil formed with a surface corresponding to the curvature of the stave and with a center projection to steady the same by entering the bung-hole will be found a great convenience in riveting up the rivets d d.
The name of the owner of the barrel or the manufacturer of the contents canbe cast or otherwise formed in the flange ofthe bush, and as this bushl cannot be removed without destroying the barrel it becomes a means of identifying the barrel and preventing fraudulent sales, particularly in cases where barrels or casks are left for the contents to be emptied, as is the case with beer, ale, &c.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
rlhe metallic flanged bush b, secured to the stave, as set forth, and receiving the bung, as specified.
