The opposite ends of the said putter head are preferably substantially square with one end thereof disposed vertically and the opposite end thereof disposed on a selected downwardly and outwardly slope. A round shaft is fixed into and extends upwardly from the central portion of said putter head preferably terminating into a square upper hand grip with opposite sides thereof disposed parallel with respect to the ends and the sides of the said putter head.
3 Claims, 9 Drawing Figures 1 MULTI-FACED GOLF BALL PUTTERS BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The head of a golf ball putter of the invention is preferably rectangular in shape, having a vertical rectangular side putting face PF-l which is arcuately cut-away vertically at GA to a lateral depth slightly greater than one-half the radius of a conventional golf ball whereby to accommodate the stroking of a conventional golf ball freely within the said vertical arcuate cut-away GA. The opposite sides of the said arcuatecut-away portion C-A of the side putting face PF-l preferably are formed with short tangent end portions T whereby to readily free the golf ball from the putter head when stroked substantially centrally by the said arcuate cutaway portion C-A of the side putting face PF-l of' the putter head. A second vertical rectangular side putting face PF-2 is disposed opposite said putting face'PF-l and is preferably provided with a flat vertical rectangular stroking face.
Each end of the head of the golf ball putter consists of a pair of opposite vertical preferably substantially square stroking faces PF-3 and PF-4. However, one of the said square end putting faces, for example PF-4, may be downwardly and outwardly sloped approximately to as indicated in FIGS. 2 and 5 to provide a slight loft to the golf ball when putted from an other than smooth lie as ofttimes is desirable when putting from the fringe or shoulder of the green or from a rough area on the green.
A preferably round shaft is fixed at 'its lower end into and extends vertically upwardly from the transverse central portion of the head of the golf ball putter of the invention terminating at its upper end portion into a square tapered handle preferably having four equal sides, each side of said square tapered handle being oriented generally parallel to one side of said putter head.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters refer to like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
FIG. 1 is a vertical front elevational view of a multifaced golf ball putter of the invention showing a preferred putter side face;
FIG. 2 is a top plan view of the putter head taken on the line 22 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a cross sectional view of the putter head taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a cross sectional view of the putter head taken on the line 4-4 of FIG. 2 showing a preferred construction thereof;
FIG. 5 is a rear elevational view of the putter head taken on the line 55 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 6 is a top elevational view of the upper end of the preferred hand grip of the golf ball putter taken on the line 66 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 7 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 7-7 of FIG. 1 showing the square central portion of a preferred tapered hand grip, each side thereof being oriented generally parallel to one side or one end of the putter head;
FIG. 8 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of FIG. 1 just above the ferrule employed between the hand grip and the lower preferably round stainless steel tapered shaft; and
FIG. 9 is a typical cross section view of the said round stainless steel tapered shaft.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters refer to' like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, the particular preferred embodiment of a multifaced golf ball putter 10 of the inventionshown in the drawings consists of a generally rectangular shaped preferably square ended horizontal putter head 11 having a fiat top and a flat bottom 111, and a vertical rectangular side putting face PF-l which is centrally arcuately cut-away vertically at C-A to a depth slightly greater than one-half the radius of a conventional golf ball 12 whereby to accommodate the stroking of the said conventional golf ball 12 freely within the said vertical central arcuate cut-away C-A. Each side of the said vertical central arcuate cut-away portion C-A of the side putting face PF-l is preferably formed with vertical tangent end portions T which are outwardly and angularly directed. whereby to permit the golf ball 12 to readily free itself from the central arcuate cut-away portion C-A of the putter face PF-l when the golf ball is stroked substantially centrally by the said arcuate cut-away portion C-A of the sideputting face PF-l.
A second rectangular side putting face PF-2'of the putter head 11 is vertically disposed opposite the said side putting face PF-l, and is suitably formed to provide a flat vertical rectangular golf ball stroking face.
The end putting faces PF-3 and PF-4 of the'putter head 11 of the golf ball putter 10 are preferably substantially square. The end PF-3 of the putter head 11 is preferably vertically disposed, while the opposite end PF-4 of the putter head 11 is downwardly and outwardly. sloped 10 to 15 degrees as best shown in FIG. 2 and FIG. 5.
A preferably round preferably steel hollow tapered shaft 20 is fixed into and extends vertically upwardly from the top of the transverse central portion 112 of the generally rectangular horizontal putter head 11 of the golf ball putter 10. The upper end of the tapered shaft 20 is telescopingly fixed in a conventional manner into the lower end portion of a suitable preferably square tapered upper tubular shaft portion 21 forming the hand grip element 22 of the said square tapered upper shaft 21. EAch side of the square tapered hand grip element 22 is oriented to be parallel to one side or an end of the putter head 1 1. To provide for long wear, the lower portion of the covering of the said hand grip is provided with a tapered ferrule thereover which also firmly engages the adjacent upper portion 200 of the tapered shaft 20. The said hand grip 22 is suitably capped by a square cap 24 fixed over the top of the plastic or leather covering 22 thereof.
The generally rectangular horizontal putter head 11 may be formed of any suitable material such as steel, brass, bronze or the like. However, to obtain a particularly desirable balance together with a smooth controllable putting stroke, the putter head 11 of the multifaced golf ball putter 10 of the invention is preferably formed of a laminated construction shown in FIG. 4 by the employment of a pair of mating outer and inner angular brass or bronze longitudinal elements 15 and 16 separated by a horizontal aluminum panel 17 disposed between the horizontal lower legs and thereof,
and separated by a vertical plastic panel 18 disposed between the vertical upper legs 151 and 161 thereof. A square horizontal preferably plastic outer filler 19 is disposed longitudinally within the vertical and horizontal legs 160 and 161 of the said inner angular mating element 16. The elements of the laminated putter head 11 are cemented or otherwise fixed together to form a unitary whole. The lower peripheral edges of the putter head 11, except at the cut-away C-A and the tangents T, are preferably curved to a Vs inch radius. The remaining edges of the putter head 11, except at the cutaway C-A and the tangents T, are preferably curved to a l/l6 inch radius. The cut-away C-A edges and the tangent T edges are slightly smoothed to be less than sharp.
In use, the golf ball putter of the instant invention provides the golfer with a single manually oriented putter preferably having four stroking faces, any one of which may be readily oriented accurately for knowledgeable selection when and as the golfer analyzes the condition of the turf, the lie of the golf ball, the contour of the putting green, and the length of the putt as 'he prepares for and executes manually the putting stroke of the putter on the golf ball with the selected proper putting force and direction whereby to accurately accomplish the putt.
Although but a single embodiment of a multi-faced golf ball putter of the invention has been disclosed herein, it is obvious that many changes may be made in the size, shape arrangement and detail of the several elements thereof without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
