SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,056, dated August 21, 1888.
Application filed December 19, 1887. Serial No. 258,293.
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLARD I, LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Valpole, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cotton or other Batting, of which the following is a specification.
In the manufacture of rolls of cotton-batting the bat is folded over on each side before being rolled up, and when it is desired to open out a roll of batting it is very difficult to find the edges, so as to open out the bat without tearing its edges. Now the object of my invention is to overcome this difficulty.
The invention consists in placing upon the bat a narrow strip of paper in a zigzag form so that it will extend diagonally from side to side across the face of the bat and extend a short distance beyond the edges of the bat, so that when the sides of the bat are folded over, the paper will project at regular intervals, and when it is required to open the bat the projecting portions of paper can be taken hold of to open it out.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a bat partly unrolled embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a portion of a bat before being folded over with the strip of paper laid on.

project, as shown at B" in Fig. 1. When it is desired to open out the bat, take hold of the small projecting portions of paper and lay them over, which will open out that side of the bat, and then the projecting pieces for the other side will be exposed to view, which is then opened out in the same manner. It will be seen that by means of this strip of paper the bat can be easily and readily opened out, thereby saving much time and annoyance in finding the edges of the hat. I place this strip of paper upon the bat while it is passing through the batting machine by mounting upon a shaft a carriage that carries a roll of paper and is caused to travel from side to side of the machine, at the same time feeding the paper upon the bat, which, being fed forward, causes the paper to be laid on in a zigzag form, as described; but I do not confine myself to any particular method of applying the paper, as various arrangements might be employed.
What I claim as my invention is A roll ofbatting composed ofa sheet of fibers folded upon itself parallel with its length, and having a strip of paper applied thereto in a zigzag manner and projecting beyond one edge of the sheet on one side of the latter as folded, substantially as shown and described.
