Description

T. H. BROWN.
Patented Aug. 14, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT @erica ri-rnononn rr. BROWN, OF vrnOoUA,W1sooNsrN, AssreNOn 'fro HENRY O. rOnsYTr-r, H. P. Pnoofron, AND OLAv e. sirene, on sans PLnon.
COMBlNED WOODEN SHEATHING AND LATH..
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,967, dated August 14, 1888.
Application filed March 14, 1888. Serial No. 267,199. (No modell .To all whom t may concern/.-
Be it known that 1, THEononE H. BROWN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and now a resident of the United States of America, having resided in the city of Viroqua, in the county of Vernon and State of Visconsin, for more than one year next preceding the filing of this application, and having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States, have invented an Improvement in Combined lVooden Sheathing and Lath, of which the following is a specification.
The objects ol' my improvements are to provide a combined wooden sheathing and lath; and the novelty consists in the peculiar groove eut in one edge of the lath, the front edge of the groove and the lath being beveled at the same angle, and also cutting or beveling the rear edge of the lath at the same angle, all as will now be more fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying d rawings.
ln the drawings, Figure l is a perspective vienr of this lath and sheathing, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of Fig. l.
The laths B are of Wood, preferably, and each is grooved on the front edge, C, at an angle, while the edge proper, c, is also cut at the same angle. .The rear edge, d, of the lath is also cut ata like angle. Then the several laths are matched together, as shown in the drawings, the projecting edge c of the one matches or lits snugly against the beveled back edge, d, of the next lath, and thus forms the rahbets or keys K, in which the plaster is clinched or held. The lap-joint :formed by the junction of the edge c with the back d of the next lath will be stronger and less liable to warp than oneniade when there is more Wood exposed to the dampeninginfluences of the plaster. This combined lath and sheathing can be used in any building and for thcsame purposes as ordinary laths and where any combined, lath and sheathing can be used.
The advantages of the lath and sheathing made according to my invention are that the surfaces are undressed, and in their rough state will afford a good face for the plaster to adhere to. The rabbets or grooves for the plaster to till into cause the same to be clinched and held in place firmly and securely. This end is most efficiently gained because of the uniform angle or bevel at both edges of the lath.
The lath or sheathing can be made of very thin lumber-say one-half inch in thicknessand thus largely obviate the danger of its Warping by being dampened when the plaster is spread.
The rabbets which form the key or clinch for holding the plates also, by their peculiar shape, assist considerably in preventing the warping of the lath. In some instances, as when the lath is Wide, a rabbet, K, can be cut in the face of the lath between the edges.
Having now described my inveution,\vliat I claim is- Theherein-described wooden slieatliing,cox1- sis'ting ofthe laths B, grooved ata uniform an gle on one edge and on the edge proper, and likewise out or beveled on the rear edge at the same angle, whereby the rabbets K are formed when the laths are fitted together, substan tiall y as and for the purposes set forth.
