Definitions
- ABSTRACT A box spring assembly including a frame with a plurality of spring members supported on the frame to define a supporting area.
- the springs may either be coil type springs or formed wire springs.
- One or more pad assemblies are disposed on the spring members over the supporting area with each pad assembly including a border wire defined by a filament wrapped in a pliable material and attached to various of the spring members with a plurality of spaced wire cross strands extending between the border wires with pliable paper cords extending across the cross strands and attached thereto.
- This invention relates to a box spring assembly including a frame with a plurality of spring members supported on the frame and which normally includes a border wire extending about the periphery of the assembly and attached to the spring members.
- the instant invention represents an improvement over the prior art assemblies by employing at least one pad assembly over the spring members with the end filaments of the pad assembly also acting as the only border wires for the spring assembly.
- FIG. 1 is a plan view of a first preferred embodiment of the instant invention
- FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of the embodiment of FIG. 1;
- FIG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view taken substantially along line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
- FIG. 4 is a plan view of a second embodiment of the instant invention.
- FIG. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional view taken substantially along line 55 of FIG. 1.
- Box spring assemblies constructed in accordance with the instant invention are generally shown at in FIG. 1 and at 110m FIG. 4.
- Both assemblies include a frame means such as that shown at 12 in FIGS. 2 and 3.
- the frame means 12 has a rectangular configuration and is normally made of wood.
- Both assemblies include a plurality of spring members supported on the frame to define a supporting area.
- the spring members in the embodiment shown in FIG. 4 are of the coil type well known in the art.
- Each spring member 14 is defined by an integral wire having a straight load bearing section 16 and a fishmouth section, generally indicated at 18, at each end of the load bearing section 16.
- Pairs of spring members 14 are disposed in overlapping relationship and the outward fishmouth sections 18 define the periphery of the assembly.
- Each fishmouth section 18 includes a generally ushaped portion 20 having upper and lower legs 22 and 24 and extending downwardly from the end of the straight load supporting section 16.
- Each fishmouth section also includes a v-shaped portion having a torsion bar 26 and upper and lower spacer bars 28 and 30.
- the upper spacer bar 28 is connected to the leg 24 of the u-shaped portion 20.
- the wire extends from the lower spacer bar 30 and is attached to the frame 12 by a staple, clip, or the like. All of the spring members 14 are parallel and spaced from one another.
- a second plurality of spring members 32 each defined by an integral wire having a straight load bearing section with fishmouth sections at each end thereof.
- the straight load bearing sections of the spring members 32 extend along and are attached to the border wire to be more specifically described hereinafter.
- a plurality of reinforcing wires 34 extend between the ends of the assembly and are attached to the fishmouths of the spring members 14 by the clips 36.
- a first pad assembly is disposed on the spring members over the supporting area.
- the first pad assembly includes a border wire means comprising oppositely disposed border filament sections 38 which extend along portions of the periphery of the supporting area defined by the spring members. Border filament sections 38 are attached to the spring members 14 by clips 40. The border filament sections 38 are the sole and only border wire means extending along the sides of the spring assembly.
- the pad assembly also includes a plurality of spaced wire cross strands 42 attached to the border wire sections 38 and extending therefrom in a direction perpendicular to the border filament sections 38. Also included in a plurality of spaced pliable cords 44 extending across the cross strands 42 and attached thereto. The spaced pliable cords 44 each comprise twisted paper through which the cross strands 42 extend.
- the border wire sections 38 each include a central metal wire or core 46 with a pliable material 48, such as paper, twisted thereabout. This is best shown in FIG. 5 wherein the cross strands 42 are shown extending through the paper pliable cords 24. Although metal wire is shown, the central wire 46 and cross strands 42 could be plastic or some other appropriate material. As shown in FIG. 1, pliable cords 44 terminate short of the ends of the assembly.
- the spring assembly 10 of FIG. 1 also includes a second pad assembly overlying the first pad assembly.
- the second pad assembly is like the first pad assembly and it includes the border wire sections 38' extending along opposite extremities or ends of the periphery of the supporting area and a second plurality of spaced wire cross strands 42.
- the wire cross strands 42 and 42 are wrapped about the border wire sections 38 and 38' respectively.
- the wire cross strands 42 and 42' are of a much lighter gauge than the wires 46and 46' of the border wire sections.
- the spring assembly 10 also includes a corner spring 50 disposed at each of the corners.
- Each corner spring 50 is arcuate as viewed in plan and includes a first horizontal portion 52 connected to the frame means 12 and a arcuate second horizontal portion 54 extending between and attached to the adjacent ends of the adjacent first and second border wire sections 38 and 38'.
- the horizontal section 54 of the corner springs are attached to the border wire sections by the clips 56.
- Each corner spring 50 also includes a v-shaped portion which interconnects the horizontal portions 52 and 54.
- FIG. 4 is like the embodiment of FIG. 1 except that the spring members are coil springs and one pad assembly is utilized with the border wire means 138 extending completely about the periphery of the assembly. Border wire means 138 also has a central wire core with paper wrapped thereabout. Wire cross strands 142 extend across the assembly and through paper cords 144. Again the border wire 138 is the only border wire in the assembly and is attached by clips or rings 140 to the upper coils of the spring members.
- a spring assembly comprising: frame means; a plurality of spring members supported on said frame means to define a supporting area, each of said spring members being defined by an integral wire having a straight section and a fishmouth section at each end thereof, at least some of said fishmouth sections being disposed about the periphery of said supporting area; a first pad assembly including first and second border wire sections extending along first and second opposite extremities of the periphery of said supporting area and attached to at least some of said fishmouth sections to define the only border wire means along said first and second opposite extremities; a second pad assembly including third and fourth border wire sections extending along third and fourth opposite extremities of the periphery of said supporting area between the border wire sections of said first pad assembly and attached to at least some of said fishmouth sections to define the only border wire means along-said third and fourth opposite extremities; a first plurality of spaced wire cross strands extending between and attached to said first and second border wire sections; a second plurality of spaced wire cross strands extending between and attached to said said first
- each corner spring includes a V-shaped portion interconnecting said first and second portions thereof.
