Abstract
A divan comprises in combination a base upon which is provided a grid top spring unit that in turn supports a mattress, the grid top spring unit comprising a perimeter border wire having its longitudinal and its transverse wire members bridged by intersecting transverse and longitudinal inner wires that form a grid and to which are connected the larger upper diameter ends of single cone shape springs that are positioned to form a pattern consisting of longitudinal and transverse lines of springs, the smaller or pointed lower ends of transverse line of springs being connected to and supported by cross slats on said base. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to divans
This invention relates to divans and has for one of
its objects the provision of a divan, whether single or double, having an improved and firm springy sup
porting surface.
According to the present invention there is provided a divan that comprises in combination a base upon which is provided a grid top spring unit that in turn supports a mattress.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the grid top spring unit for a divan base comprises a perimeter border wire having its longitudinal and its transverse wire members bridged by intersecting transverse and longitudinal inner wires thatform a grid and to which are connected the larger upper diameter ends of single cone shape springs that are positioned to form a pattern consisting of longitudinal and transverse lines of springs, the smaller or pointed lower ends of transverse rows of springs being connected to and supported by cross slats.
The grid top spring unit may alternatively be of any other suitable construction.
To enable the invention to be clearly understood and readily carried into effect a preferred embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of the grid top spring unit,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the underside of the unit,
Figure 3 is a perspective view from above of the grid top spring unit superimposed on a divan base but with a mattress to be supported by the unit omitted,
Figure 4 is a plan view of one half of a double size unit hinged together, illustrating the lay out of the grid,
Figures 5 and 6 are front and end elevations respectively of a hinge for connecting together a double size foldable grid unit, and
Figure 7 is a detail view illustrating how ends of wires that form the grid are wrapped around and welded to perimeter border wires.
Upholstery materials have been omitted from
Figures 1 to4forciarity.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 to 4 of said drawings the grid top spring unit for a divan base comprises a wire grid consisting of longitudinal wires 1 and transverse wires 2 connected at their ends respectivelyto transverse and longitudinal perimeter border wire members 3 and 4. Preferably the ends of the wires 1 and 2 of the grid are wrapped around and welded to the members 3 and 4 of the border wires as shown in Figure 7.
The wires 1 and 2 of this grid pass over the upper larger diameter ends of single cone springs 5 and are connected to these wires 1 and 2 by joining clips 6 (Figure 3) the outermost rows of springs also being connected to the members 3 and 4 of the perimeter border wire by similar clips 6.
The lower smaller diameter end of each spring 5 is connected by two staples 7 to a cross slat 8, these slats ensuring a firm sprung support.
Divans incorporating grid top spring units constructed in accordance with this invention may be made in single or double sizes and in the latter case the spring unit is allowed to fold by connecting together, using hinges 9 shown in greater detail in
Figures 5 and 6. This hinging together of the unit allows a double size divan to be folded to facilitate handling of such divans and permitting access thereof into houses or the like.
The grid top spring unit included in the divan assembly serves as a support for a mattress (not shown) and combines with the mattress to ensure that firm and comfortable supporting surface is provided.
The unit is supported by and connected to a divan base 10 which in the case of double divans may comprise two hinged together halves.
This divan base 10 is an open frame having a support surface, constituted by said slats 8, to which the lower smaller diameter ends of the springs 5 of the grid top spring unit are attached by the staples 7.
The base 10 and grid top spring unit 5 are made separately but are joined together by said staples 7.
They are then enclosed with upholstery common to both. On double divan size the grid top spring unit is one unit of two halves and is allowed to fold by using the hinges 9 (Figure 4). The divan base 10 is made up of two halves and the hinged grid top spring unit allows the divan base to fold. The spring unit and divan base is upholstered with common fillings.
The size of the unit and the number of springs may be varied to suit requirements.
The grid top spring unit described above with reference to the accompanying drawings is a preferred unit but can be of any other suitable form.
An added advantage of the construction according to the invention is that the spring height can be changed without difficulty.
1. A divan comprising in combination a base upon which is provided a grid top spring unit that in turn supports a mattress.
2. A divan as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the grid top spring unit comprises a perimeter border wire having its longitudinal and its transverse wire members bridged by intersecting transverse and longitudinal inner wires that form a grid and to which are connected the larger upper diameter ends of single cone shape springs that are positioned to form a pattern consisting of longitudinal and transverse lines of springs, the smaller or pointed lower ends of transverse rows of springs being connected to and supported by cross slats.
3. A divan as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the longitudinal and transverse wires of the grid are connected to the upper larger diameter ends of the single cone springs by joining clips, and the out
