Description

' HYDRANT. A
PATENTED MAY 26, 1863.
nfX ,QL-foar A J. G. MURDOGK oft/k @Aww/v9: Mofas/azi (/sl/f) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. MURDOCK, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANTS.
ToI all whom t may concern: y.
Be it known that I, J oHN G. MURnocK, of
Cincinnati, `Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydrants, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beingvhadto the annexed drawing, making part of this specification.
The subject of my invention is a convenient aid eiective form of wasting hydrant, having a moving water-way which shuts aga-inst the pressure. Y
In the accompanying drawing theupper and lower portions of my hydrant are represented, respectively, bya perspective view and ayertical section.
A is the chamber or barrel terminating in an open flaring top or rim, B.
W is a waste aperture through the side ot' the barrel.
C is the supply-pipe, terminating in the nozzle D, which rises into the interior of the barrel..V
. ld is a pipe, which performs the double funcim of piston-rod and water-way, perforated at F, near its lower end, for the ascent ot' the water into and through it, and furnished at bottom with a leather valve, G. rIhe pipe E is also provided with a piston-head, H, in the form of an inverted cup, and having leather gaskets I J.
w is a waste-aperture in the head H, which aperture, when the-piston is depressed, communicates with the aperture W in the side of the barrel.
'Ihe described' hollow pistony E H constitutes my moving lwater-way, and is operated by means of a cam or eccentric, K, upon thel l'handle L. A slot, M, in the stockjN, permits` the slight play of the spout O incident to the operation of thehydrant.
Operation: The hydrant is opened by raising the handle tothe position represented, ro as to lift the valve Groff ot the seat formed by the ventage ot" nozzle D, and to allow the water to rush into the moving water-way E H, as indicated by the arrows. The instant that the water-way is lifted the lower gasket, I, covers and closes the waste-aperture W, While the upper gasket, J, serves to prevent any escape of water from the Vaperture w while the hydrant is open. The act ot' closing the -hydrant, exposing the ventage W, allows the contents of the hydrant to escape.. The spout and handle being unshipped the Water-way or piston may be readily withdrawn for inspection or repair.
I claim herein as new and of my invention The wasting open-mouthed barrel A B W,
nozzle D, valve G, gaskets I J, and ventages u* w, when combined in the manner described with a moving water-way shutting against the pressure, all as herein described and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN G. MURDOCK. Witnesses:
GEO. H. KNIGHT, A. S. LUDLow.
