PATENTED HAR 41975 SHEET 2 OF 2 COMBUSTION CHAMBER The invention relates to combustion chambers. The combustion space of steam boilers of modern construction is formed, in many cases, of tubes gas-tightly welded together and disposed horizontally or slightly inclined in the combustion space region. This coil-like or helically wound disposition of the tubes forming the walls of the combustion chamber offers the advantage that uniform heating of all tubes is secured to a wide extent without choke points or throttling locations in the tubes.
When steam boilers of very large capacity are built, the dimensions of the combustion space must be made correspondingly large. With a large combustion space, however, the difficulty arises of transferring the heat located in the center of the boiler to the walls of the boiler. For this reason, partitions have been provided in large boilers to subdivide the combustion space. A heretofore known construction for a steam boiler with a partition is described for example, in the German Published Prosecuted Application DAS No. L24 1 ,460. This partition is formed of two rows of tubes disposed adjacent one another with vertically oriented tubes, through which the flow occurs in U-shaped manner. The partition is suspended freely in the combustion chamber without any connection to the walls of the combustion chamber. If a partition of such construction is disposed in the combustion chamber of a steam generator, difficulty is encountered mainly in keeping the partition clean, since the soot blowers provided for the walls of the combustion chamber cannot be used directly. A further maindifficulty that is encountered is in the distribution or combination of the water-steam mixture between the partition and the walls of the combustion chamber.
These difficulties exist also if the partition and the walls of the combustion chamber are connected in series in accordance with the riser-downcomer system of construction.
It is accordingly an object of the invention of the instant application to provide a combustion chamber with a partition, wherein no distribution problems and no special problems in keeping the partition clean will arise.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, there is provided in accordance with the invention a combustion chamber of a steam generator having combustion chamber walls formed of tubes disposed horizontally or with a slight inclination, a partition subdividing the combustion chamber and comprising two adjacent walls each formed of tubes disposed in a manner similar to the tubes of the combustion chamber walls, each end of each tube of the partition being connected to a tube of the combustion chamber walls.
In accordance with another feature of the invention, the combustion chamber walls have a reinforcing structure comprising horizontally extending beams, the tube walls of the partition being connected to the beams so as to provide simultaneously a support for the beams.
In accordance with a further feature of the invention, at least one cross-over location for the tubes of both the tube walls of the partition is provided so that each tube of the partition mutually connects tubes of the combustion chamber located on opposite sides of the partition.
In accordance with yet another feature of the invention, the tubes of one of the tube walls of the partition are connected to the combustion chamber walls that are adjacent to the other of the tube'walls of the partition. e
Other features which are considered as characteristic for the invention are set forth in the appended claims.
Although the invention is illustrated and described herein as embodied in a combustion chamber, it is nevertheless not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope and range of equivalents of the claims.
The construction and method of operation of the invention, however, together with additional objects and advantages thereof will be best understood from the following description of the specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic longitudinal sectional view of the combustion chamber of a steam boiler constructed in accordance with the invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of FIG. I taken along the line llll in the direction of the arrows; and FIGS. 3 to 5 are diagrammatic plan views of different embodiments of the invention showing various ways of connecting the tubes of the partition to the tubes of the combustion chamber walls.
Referring now to the drawing and first particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2 thereof, there is shown therein a steam boiler I which includes a combustion chamber 2 with burners 3 and combustion chamber walls 4 to 9. A partition 10, which is formed of tube walls 11 and 12, is furthermore provided. The steam boiler 1 is surrounded by a stiffening or reinforcing structure I4, which is formed of horizontally disposed beams 13 and vertical connecting sections 15. As may be seen particularly in FIG. 1, the tubes of the combustion chamber walls 4 to 9 are disposed so that they have a slight inclination on all sides.
As is apparent from FIG. 2, the tubes of the tube wall 12 are disposed horizontally. Some combustion chamber walls per se may, of course, also be provided with horizontally disposed tubes, and the partition with slightly rising or upwardly inclined tubes.
A stiffening or reinforcing structure 16, which prevents warping of the tube walls 11 and 12, is situated between the tube walls 11 and 12 and the partition 10. The largely horizontally disposed tubes of the tube walls 11 and 12 (FIG. 3) offer the advantage that the horizontally disposed beams 13 of greater length are held together in the middle by the tube walls and can therefore be made considerably lighter.
The arrows (not specifically identified) in FIGS. 3 to 5 represent the path of the water or steam in the tubes of the combustion chamber walls and the tube walls of the partition. In the region of the partition, the tubes of the tube wall 11 are connected, as shown in the embodiment of FIG. 3, between the tubes of the combusion chamber walls 4 and 8. Similarly, the tubes of the tube wall 12 are connected to the tubes of the combustion chamber walls 5 and 7, situated to the right-hand side of the partition, as viewed in FIG. 3. This arrangement has the advantage that the space between the tube walls 11 and 12 is free of wateror steam-carrying tubes, and the stiffening structure 16 can thus be installed without obstruction. Disadvantages may occur, particularly when the partition 10 is long, if the comheated differently.
This drawback can be avoided if the tube walls 11 and 12 are connected with the walls of the combustion chamber according to the embodiments of FIGS. 4 and 5. In FIG. 4 the tubes ofthe tube wall 11 are connected, in the middle of the partition, into the tube wall 12 and, similarly, from the tube wall 12 into the tube wall 11. Through this cross-over location, water or steam flow in the form of a figure-eight is produced, as is shown by the arrows in FIG. 4. Different heating of the combustion chamber spaces situated on both sides of the partition can therefore no longer lead to different heatingof the parallel flows of water or steam.
A given equalization or balancing of the varied heating is also attained in the embodiment according to FIG. 5, wherein the tubes of the tube wall 11 are connected to the tubes of the combustion chamber walls 4 and 8, and the tubes of the tube wall 12 to the combustion chamber walls 5 and 7, so that the water or the steam flows first through the three combustion chamber walls 5, 6 and 7 and then through the tube wall 12 facing the combustion chamber walls 4, 8 and 9, as indicated by the arrows in FIG. 5. Also, in this case, the different heating of the combustion chamber spaces formed by the partition is equalized or balanced.
The construction of the partition of two mutually spaced- apart tube walls 11 and 12 renders it possible to dispose standard soot blowers between the combustion chamber walls, which are conventional for such use, in addition to a supplemental stiffening structure therebetween. This construction also avoids all problems of connecting the partition with respect to the combustion chamber walls.
