SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The object of the presentinvention is to provide a device of the aforementioned type which will perform the functions of two types of machines commonly in use at the present time. These machines are separate and distinct and are used for the assembly of the clutches prior to clamping them together at which point of time the rivetting operation is carried out in the other machine. The first type of machine is used for the assembly of the components and holding them together, and the second type of machine is then used to take the pre-assembled components and to hold them in proper alignment while the rivetting is carried out either by manual or pneumatic means. The former type of machine is not designed to withstand the stresses caused by the rivetting operation.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a cross sectional side elevation of the device of this invention,
FIG. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional side elevation of the shaft mounting arrangement of the device of FIG.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the work table of the device of FIG. 1,
FIG. 4 is an underside plan view of the work table, and
FIG. 5 is a plan view of the work table;
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT In the construction illustrated the machine incorporates a base on which there are arranged a plurality of stand legs 11 which form a cavity under the base 10 to house an actuating mechanism 12 hereinafter described.
A boss 13 extends up a short distance from the base 10 and is either integral therewith or a weldment fabricated as required. A hollow sleeve 14 isjournalled inside the boss and desirably there is a thrust bearing l5, 15 at the bottom and top, and roller 16 and ball bearings 17 in appropriate locations along the side to give the device the necessary stability and freedom of movement. An air connection 18 is provided between these two components and one or more radial air inlet holes 19 are provided to the area between the bearings, and desirably there is a peripheral groove on the inside and outside of the boss through which the air passes around from an aperture in the boss, and then into radial holes in the sleeve. Seals are provided on each side-of each peripheral groove.
A reciprocatable shaft 20 extends up through the hollow sleeve and has clearance in it so that air. can pass along the shaft to a cylinder'2l which is arranged with a piston 22 therein with a seal 23 between the piston 22 and the shaft 20. The shaft 20 slides with respect to the piston 22 and air acts on the underside of the piston 22 which has a tubular extension 24 passing upwards and is received in a faceplate type table 25 which the piston 22 pushes upwards when displaced by the air. The table 25 has a plurality of open radial slots 26 extending from the edge from which vertical clamp column arms 27 extend and these have clamping portions 28 on their ends so that when the table 25 is moved upwards the compo nents 'c on it are clamped to the table by the clamping portions.
The cylinder 21 has a top cover .29 with a flat surface to retain the piston and through which the tubular extension 24 of the piston slides; a seal is provided between these components. The top cover has a number of radial grooves 30 on its upper face in which the locating parts of the clamps are located corresponding to the slots 25 in the table. A separate guide piece 31 is located on each side of the slots and locates in slots in the sides of the clamp column arms 27.
The clamp arms 27 may be actuated in unison or separately along the grooves 30 and conveniently a link mechanism 32 with spider arms 33 is arranged and actuated by a handle or wheel 34 on the underside of the cylinder cover 29. The spider arms 33 radiate from a central boss 36 joumalled on the tubular extension 24.
The shaft 20 extends up through. the piston extension 24 and the table 25 and has a threaded or other attachment end 37 so that clamping devices 38 may be secured thereto. The shaft 20 is actuated by an auxiliary cylinder 39 and piston 40, the former being inverted and positioned on top of the base 110. The piston rod 41 of the auxiliary piston extends to the underside of the base and includes the actuating mechanism 12. A foot lever 42 which provides for manual operation, i.e., for bedding down the clutch fingers when the assembly is first put together; this is obtained by linking the foot lever 42 to the lower end of piston shaft 41, to the lower end of shaft 20 and to a mounting link 43. Screw adjustments may be provided on either or both ends of the shaft so as to provide for the necesssary adjustment of the components. The foot lever 42 is pivotally attached to a slide 44 on the shaft 20 to take up any thrust on the mechanism when the rivetting is taking place.
The underside of the main cylinder is provided with a friction pad preferably of two wedges biassed in in one direction so that the cylinder 21 is free to rotate in one direction but locks in the other direction. This wedge assembly 45 may be mounted on the auxiliary cylinder 39 or on abutments extending out from the base. It provides a break to the rotation of the table 25 and absorbs the shocks when hammering is carried out on the top of the table.
The column arms may incorporate hardened anvil pads 46 for rivetting operations and these can be radially adjusted and slide over the work face to the required location.
