IMPROVEMENT I'N CYLlNDER-MOLDS FOR MAKING PAPER.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 38,684, dated May 26, 1863.
To aZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. JONES, of the city of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful improvement in cylinder-molds for the manufacture of paper and paste, steam, junk, binders, or other boards produced from fibrous materials; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of a cylindermold constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a right-hand end view of the'same. Fig.8 is a transverse vertical section of the same in the line at a: of Fig. 1, looking in a right-hand direction.

This invention consists in a certain construction of what are .termed the cylindermolds used in the manufacture of paper and the various. kinds of boards produced from fibrous materials, whereby provision is made for carrying away the water from their inte-. riors through hollow journals, thereby dispensing with the use of packing inside of the vat by the substitution of stufiing-boxes outside, thereby facilitating the repacking and obviating much of the waste of stuff which is unavoidable with inside packing.
To enable others skilled in'theart to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A-A' represent-the cylinder-heads, of which the left-hand one, A, is of the usual construction and attached tothe shaft B in the usual manner; but A is constructed with a hollow journal, to, for the passage through it of the suction-pipe b, and with an inner concentric hub, 0, attached only by diagonal or oblique arms or. braces if for the reception of one end of the shaft D, which, by this arrangement of the hubc, is permitted to be shortened at that end sufficiently to permit the suction-pipe to be turned downward within the cylinder in the manner represented at b in Fig. 1, which is very desirable, while at the same time both cylinder-heads are enabled to be secured to the shaft and the whole cylinder enabled to be kept in line therewith. The sides or circumferential portion. of the cylinder, which is covered with wire-cloth, may be constructed and secured to thesha-ft in the usual manner. The left-hand end of the shaft B, which protrudes through the head A of the cylinder, is supported in a hearing, 01, within the vat'O. The other end is supported by the hub c. The hollow journal 41 works in a box, j, in the righthand end of the vat, and is supported outside of the vat on friction-rollers e ci'o'r' any other suitable bearin g, and outside of this box there is applied around the said journal a leather or india-rubber ring, k, which is secured and compressed around the journal by means of a plate, f, and screws g g, passing through the said plate and screwing into the said vat in such a manner as to prevent leakage between the box and journal; At the outer end of the journal there is a stuffingbox, h, to prevent leakage around the exterior of the suction pipe I). The cylinder may, if desired, have both heads constructed with hollow journals and otherwise as described with reference to the head A, to permit the introduction of suction pipes in the same manner at both ends.

The cylinder-mold, having one or both cylinder-heads, constructed with a hollow journal,
