Description
J. MEGAW. ROTARY PUMP.
No. 24,650. Patented July 5, 1859.
UNITED sTArns PigrENT OFFICE.
JARBETT MEGAW, OF WILMINGTON, DELAXQXRE.
ROTARY PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24.650. dated July 5, 1859.
Be 1t known that I, Janmc'r'r Mnoxw. of
ventany air entering within the chamber of the pump while in operatlon. Also of castthe city of Vilmington, of the county of ing the casing of the pump with flanged Newcastle, in the State of Delaware. have invented new and useful Improvements in Rotary Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification. in which Figure 1 is a transverse section or elevation, and F 2 is a longitudinal section.
The nature of my invention consists in so combining the water packing chambers, formed around the axis or shaft. between the suction pipe and stuffing boxes, with the ascending main or discharge pipe of the pump, that a portion of the water discharging through the main will be forced with a pressure nearly equal to the force with which the water is raised, into the water packing chambers and thus a constant and continuous supply of water, to said packing chambers, while the pump is running. insured, and that too, under considerable pressure, and consequently all possibility of air insinuating itself into the pump through the stuffing boxes avoided. The packed condition of the water presenting an impassable barrier to the atmosphere so long as the pump continues to discharge; and as l l l this is the case the pump will not. be liable to I lose its hold upon the water even though it through the stuffing boxes.
be kept in continuous operation for a week or more, as is often necessary.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct the casing in which the wings revolve, similar to what is known as the Gwynne rotary pump, extending the shaft through or out at both sides so as to apply the motive power on both ends of it at the same time. By this arrangement the shaft is only required of one half the size it would be, if the power was applied at one end only. Also of forming a water chamber on each side around the said shaft to be fed and kept full of water or any other fluid by supply pipes connected to the ascending main pipe, thus bringing the pressure of the water in the ascending main, between the stufling box and suction pipe as shown upon the drawings. By this means I prenozzles, which secure it to the suction pipes at any angle required, in order to avoid bends or turns in the pipes as shown upon the drawings.
To explain more fully by referring to the drawings Iavould say Figure 1 is a transverse section showing the wings B B B B and the circle in which they revolve by the dotted lines through the casing. A A is the suction pipe. D D is the bed frame. M is the ascending main pipe. E is the foot valve.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of rotary pump showing the improvements attached. N, N, N, N, are the casings or sides of the pump with flanged nozzles P. P. to secure them to the suction pipes. I3, B, are wings. C, C, is the shaft, on which the wings and pulleys are securely fastened. D D is the bed plate in which is formed the suction pipe. A, A, A, A are inlet or suction pipes which are bolted to the flanged nozzles on the bed plate, and to flanged nozzles around the center of the pump casing, and holds it securely to its place at. any angle required. G, G, are small chambers around the shaft for the reception of water or other fluids. H, H, are small pipes to supply the chain bers with water from the ascending main pipe M to prevent air getting into the pump F F, are stuff ings around the shaft to keep the water or other fluids in the chambers. K K K K are four stands which rest on and are bolted to the bed plate for the shaft to revolve in. L L are castiron pulleys for applying the motive power on each end of the shaft at I I I I are the insides or E 1s the same time. water channels in the suction pipes. the foot valve.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Combining the water packing chambers. formed around the axis or shaft between the suction pipe and stuffing boxes, with the ascending main or discharge pipe of the pump, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
