Description

A, c. WILL|AMS.
Stove.
Nd. 38,636. Patented May 19, 1863.
157/0 em Z07" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. CALDWELL WILLIAMS, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO SHEAR & PACKARD.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,636, dated May 19, 1863.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. CALDWELL WILL- IAMS, of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Cool and Wood Burning Stoves;
and I declare the following specification, with the drawings accompanying it and forming part thereof, to be a full and complete description of my invention.
Figure 1 represents,in perspective, the front or fire-box part of a cooking-stove, witha portion of the top and of the right-hand end wall removed to show my apparatus applied within the fire-box, and which is constructed as follows:
In place of the solid wall of clay and metal usually forming the front or end walls of the fire-box, I substitute, in whole or in part, an ogening or window, which is covered on the inside of the fire-box by a grate, A A. This grate is hollow. Its construction is shown at Fig. 2, as seen from the inside of the stove. It is formed of hollow upright bars B B, en'- t :red at top and bottom into horizontal bars U C. These bars at each end enter into upright hollow boxes or chambers D D, which are attached to the front plate of the stove on each side of the opening. Through this plate orifices G G are made into the chambers D D, so as to admit air from the atmosphere within the grate-bars B and O. The bars B have on their side edges at d d, facing each other so as to be free from any obstruction of ashes, slits or openings on a, to permit the air to pass out into the fire. The outside of the opening or window in the front plate or end plate, as the case might be, is covered with a sash-frame, W, fitted with plates of talc in the usual manner, and is made to fit tightly against the plate. The bottom grate, E, is made with a broad margin or guard-plate, e, as the front bar of its frame, or a separate plate may be laid upon th e grate close to the grate A, in order to guaid from currents of air passing upward at the lower edge of the grate A and injuring the draft of air through its bars. It will be manifest, that by this arrangement of parts the supply of air furnished to the upright front of the coalbed is distributed by the orifices in the bars B equally over its whole surface. This produces a bright glow upon it, furnishing a cheerful light through the glazed window W, which is the principal object of my invention. The air warmed by the hot bars B, on reaching the upper surface of the fire, will inflame and burn up the unconsumed gas and fuliginous matter of the coal. The current of air through the grates will preserve them from destruction by the heat of the fire.
VVhatI claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The arrangementofahollow grate placed and fitted to the stove, as described, in combination with the glazed window or door, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The employment of a guard-plate made either as part of or independent of the ordinary grate, in combination with the vertical hollow grate and glazed window, the subjectmatter of the first claim, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
A. O. WILLIAMS.
